Re: Helicoils in Al struts

They come in standard length equivalent to 1dia or 2dia of the screw in question. As mentioned, that should be sufficient to allow the screw to become weak link in the assy. Any more than necessary usually means more work to clean up the mess when failure occurs. Having enough room for thread depth ...

Re: Helicoils in Al struts

Odds are that only 3 or 4 threads from the helicoil will be needed provide enough shear area to match the root area of the screw.

The details of the assembly should certainly be the last word. But typically the screw will fail first.

Re: Kite won't lift to zenith (Flysurfer Warrior)

the warrior is pretty old. it was last made prior to the first psycho. flysurfer tried to make it user friendly with their first try at "pressureless depower" before they began using what they called the WAC depower. neither was very good It was really a just 2-line kite with brakes attached separat...

Re: Go Foils are Strong!

It does look cool,
But,I think by the time you make it strong enough to lift your ass out of the water, they all do that.

Re: lamination tape

with regard to BWDs comment. the surfboard guys do something call a 'cut lap' when laminating the overlap of top and bottom. cured layer has tape (nothing more elaborate than good masking tape) to mark desired edge. final layer is put in place and wet-out overlapping the tape. once green, a sharp ra...

Re: lamination tape

both carbon and glass cloth can be sourced in narrow widths. 2"-6" wide 'tape' is common. the edges do not frey, but are a bit thicker than the rest of the material. if you put it beneath a top layer, it tends to trap air at the edge. if you put it on top, a bit of sanding is necessary to 'fair' the...

Re: best way to attach a baseplate hydrofoil on regular surf

[ There must be some theory behind this widely used combination in windsurfing. Any ideas why? IMO its because: 1- stainless screws are stronger than brass. 2-stainless on stainless tends to gaul ( weld itself together) 3- the insert has enough thread area to be strong enough in brass and resists g...

Re: How much glass

Thanks for this advice guys. The only reason I'm using the plywood right not is to get all kinks out of my process before I move on to more expensive core materials. As far as the triax goes I have only been able to find it in 20oz so far. Anyone know where a good place to get that stuff in the US?...

Re: How much glass

structurally, you don't need any glass as reinforcement for a light wind board with 1/2" wood core. i'm sure the plywood will hold up for quite some time. if the function of the glass is only to set the rocker, 18 oz is overkill. one layer of anything should be enough. (no more than 1 ply of 4 oz on...

Re: Commercial Strut Thickness

The relevance of the strut thickness would certainly appear important if all other variables were held constant. But, in all fairness to any particular design, you should consider the entire package. cross-section profile chord length chord thickness strut span length wetted surface area. ? addition...
