Get yourself a pair of surf boots.

Yes you learn very quickly that lauching a kite from it's back is really annoying.
Just as a thought Dwight I wonder what would happen if the nose line was off set to one side slightly, more automatic (forgeting the shape locking side of things for a moment).

Use a wide webbing strap around the centre strut.

I always wear them
I have found that safety glasses with a strap work the best for me.
Tinted for the summer clear for the winter.
No worries with them breaking and if you loose them it no big deal at $15.
They last about a season then I get a new pair
