Re: Drone recommendations

I have the Mini Pro 3. It is an excellent starter drone with good performance characteristics. Unless the wind is fairly light, I haven't shot kiting much at all. Also, given the relatively slow flight speed it is best to not get too close to moving kites. It is too easy to get bashed before you can...

Re: Warning, never do this!

Don't go anywhere near large vessels when you are under kite power unless you have a good idea what they will do to the wind. The impact can cover large distances with larger vessels. It is easy to have your kite stalled and dropped to the water, even well after they have passed. Having the ship sho...

Re: The Beginning of Kitesurfing 1998 Hawaii Archives

Toby, that is a Kiteski bar, we've talked about them quite a lot on KF but not for a long time. There was no "real kill switch," although Hung Vu designed depowering leash something along those lines. I would say if you let go of the bar, built like a bicycle frame, you could decapitate a rhino with...

Re: Are you afraid of sharks?

Not unless the circumstances justify it. They definitely warrant respect and attempted understanding. The degree of risk will vary with context.

The single shark impact on my camera array on Sunday. They usually hit it a lot more often.

Re: Happy new year to everyone!

Happy New Year Toby, wishing you a good one! We have a strong El Nino bringing strong, occasionally stormy conditions. Grab some good wind and try to avoid the bad bits. Looks like quite a lot of violent weather out there in many parts of the world these days.

Re: Choosing the wrong kite size - anyone can relate?

I could give you a number of guys, many of whom were newer kiters, who might have real valuable input but they didn't survive the overpowered session. Choices count.

Re: 20m LEI Kites - Its Time

Rick, did you get wind turbulences from the jet? The impact of the turbulence could’ve been quite bad. Wing tip vortices have crashed or come close to messing up other aircraft. I was surprised that didn’t feel any turbulence which was a good thing. I looked into it a bit after, and it seems the ma...

Re: 20m LEI Kites - Its Time

We share some of the weather which brings wind to the Abacos in SE Florida. This time of year, the better winds come with stronger fronts. It can be strong at times although it can also be light particularly between fronts. I would cover the likely wind range with a variety of kite sizes including b...

Re: 20m LEI Kites - Its Time

Thank you Peter, me too when things workout. It keeps me kiting, looking for that next unusual image. It would be great to see some of your shots! A few more shot with larger kites appear below. The first shot is in TCI again. The wind had come up suddenly in the low 20's off the north shore of Midd...

Re: 20m LEI Kites - Its Time

I've been shooting these sort of photos for a long time. I use two GoPro cameras on the kite and one on my helmet as a rule. I typically need large subjects given the distortions from the wide angle from the GoPros. The cameras on the kite use a nylon and velcro leading edge mount off Amazon. The ot...
