Re: Learning in light winds?

Lots of good advice upthread. I can add the following: - If you are going to learn in light winds, a light kite that stays up in the air and relaunches easily are very important. - Having extra power on tap is a good thing when learning. In lieu of pumping the foilboard you can sheet in with the kit...

Re: How do you make a smooth heel side to toe side turn on a foil board ?

I went from flipping the kite up and around to downlooping and now find it more natural. Now I down loop exclusively, unless i'm stuck in a traffic jam. Timing is critical, otherwise you end up with slack lines, a downed kite, and the foil headed towards the lines. I'm regular foot and almost always...

Re: Best way to wipe out on a foil?

I keep my straps (front only) pretty loose. If i feel a fall coming i try to flick the foil away from me, sheet in, and try to eject downwind and away from it. I then try to break the water surface with my feet or arm, then immediately body drag sideways away from where the foil presumably is. I don...

Re: Hydrofoil Mirage

Yeah it's not something you just 'try'. You need to commit to acquiring a setup, learn what to unlearn for success, and deal with the counterintuitiveness and pain. To make things easier for local learners, I give them 10-15 min sessions to body drag with my foil out in deep water then ride it back ...

Re: Hydrofoil virgin

For anybody having trouble adapting to high AR race wings from low AR freeride wings, this tip helped me out a bunch: Low AR is like a fighter jet taking off of an aircraft carrier, one good sling and you're up in the air. High AR is like a 747 on an airport runway, you need distance to build speed ...

Re: Upwind body dragging tips in onshore winds, choppy water

If you are experienced enough, you can get going in shallow water by diving the kite enough to almost get planing on the first (or second powerstroke). Engage the lift of the foil as soon as possible, and push down just as quickly as soon as you get near the length of the mast.

Re: Shortest Practical Hydrofoil Board

Holy crap that wave at 4:30 is insane!

I was thinking more of a laminated wood core wakeskate, with an aluminum plate on top to distribute the forces (and nuts for threading and holes through the deck for the bolts).

Re: Shortest Practical Hydrofoil Board

Has anyone mounted a garden-variety wakeskate to a foil? Any issues with durability, float, or finding proper drilling placement for the plate? Thinking about doing this with a Lift foil and a $100 WS.

I'm guessing this might be ideal if you have a small car, but it might make jibing and light wind tricky.
