Re: Epirb? flares? 2 way radio set to maritime channel, cell ph in a waterproof case?

Cell phones often don't have reception even a little bit off shore. EPIRBs are the best but expensive. Fins wouldn't have helped Gunnar. Electric motors get wet. I would go with a whistle. Doesn't need batteries and can be heard a mile away. Jetscream whistle is $2.50. Even if you aren't in trouble ...

Re: Important Message: I almost died - Gunnar Biniasch

"Yes absolutely go out and check on someone if you see they may be in distress, but unless you are confident in how to rescue a kite or board or person, go get help."

Such good advice. Don't be ashamed that you can't do the rescue solo. Get help.

Kai on the proper hydrofoil kite. Exact opposite.

“At first everyone wanted fast turning kites in the surf, but when you’re strapless waveriding, you want slower kites with more constant power and it’s the same thing with hydrofoils. I don’t want something that reacts super quick. I want something forgiving that I can push to its limits.” from thek...

Re: Important Message: I almost died - Gunnar Biniasch

Short version of this video, Gunnar was drowning for an hour and nobody even checked on him. What Gunnar learned: Kiters don't give a shit if you live or die. They will be boosting right next to your body and go back have a beer and tell everyone what a great sesh it was. Almost bummed out by the co...

Re: I need convincing too:) Bar back lines!

Thanks for all the info on spectra and dyneema. I'm always trying to learn more. I was sure that the methods used were quite different and caused slight differences in the lines, but I could have been wrong. It's a little bit weird talking about snapping lines like it was some disaster. I've snapped...

Re: I need convincing too:) Bar back lines!

In the mid-1990 s, PSR developed a patented recrystallization process for converting Honeywell s S-900 fiber into a higher strength material. The Plasma process produced ropes that were the highest strength constructions available, predating the availability of ropes made from either S-1000 or SK-75...

Re: I need convincing too:) Bar back lines!

Just use your lines and let them wear until they snap. When they look like a caterpillar they are about to snap.

Re: I need convincing too:) Bar back lines!

lines get stronger with use as the dyneema molecules gets more and more aligned in the same direction, but that's why not why they weaken, they weaken because every time sand rubs against the lines, or you twist them on to the bar, or you make a turn, the lines fray and wear, that's where they get w...

Re: Is Wakestyle dead?

Many of us, including me, gave up on windsurfing because it was too hard to reach the top levels of windsurfing that deliver the same euphoric high you can get after your first 10 sessions in kiting. I never wind surfed but most of the old fellas around here quit windsurfing because they would see ...
