Re: Building my next mast

Think you need a bigger board... pretty wood molds though Smaller, actually. I built that one out of an old windsurfer that I broke on a hard landing. And I overbuilt it. Its HEAVY. I am going to build something smaller and MUCH lighter. The molds aren't wood. They are PVC, and covered in finishing...

Building my next mast

I'm prepping the molds for my next mast. This one will be about 84cm. My previous one was about 54cm, and I've pretty much outgrown it. 20180518_200229[1].jpg From what I have gleaned on this forum, the best way to get this stiff is to lay the carbon cloth so the fibers lie at a 45 degree angle. The...

What direction were the fibers? How many layers of what weight cloth?
Outer layers were twill weave but I also threw in a lot of carbon scrap with the fibers going the length of the mast.

Re: How thick can I lay carbon fiber?

I made the carbon skin over my foam core WAY more than 1mm, but I have a very twisty mast.

Re: How far do you drive to kite?

NE winds, 5 minutes.
SW or NW winds, 20-60 minutes.
S winds, up to 2 hours, then maybe a boat ride.
Hatteras vacation, 11 hours.

Re: Against all odds - Ragnarok 2018

I managed to finish 2.2 laps. You really need to get ahead of the pack before the 1st gate. This is what it looks like if you get stuck in the middle and have to wait: RagnarokGate1.jpg Ragnarokgat1.jpg Then you need to pick your course carefully so you don't get into any wind shadows, or get stuck ...

All of them. If you’re confident foiling 110 is better. But for learning shorter masts are better because the falls hurt less.
I've already learned on short masts. Time to build a longer one. I still overfoil or hit the tops of waves a lot. A longer foil would give me a larger error margin.

Re: Who rides the tallest mast?

I ride 110cm and I would not go back to 100cm. What kind of riding do you do? Racing? Waves? Heavy chop? I presume not flat water. I am asking because I am still working on my home made foils. I have a working version I was out on last weekend, but I still haven't built a full length mast. Trying t...

Who rides the tallest mast?

I am not talking about somebody trying something insanely huge just to see if it will work. There is a video of a guy riding a 10 foot mast. What I am talking about is who regularly rides the tallest masts. How big of a mast do you enjoy riding?
