Re: Snowkite Gliding - tell us why we are so stupid

I'm not convinced that people are being cautious. You just can't call yourself cautious if you fly more than 10 feet above hard ground while using standard kite gear where a line break, harness failure, or canopy tear would send you crashing into the ground. I just think the numbers of people doing ...

Re: Late March/Early April Kiting in the Bay Area

I have no idea why yojimbo is just talking about the coast - there are kiteboarding spots inside the Bay too. Late March and early April are usually great times to go kiteboarding in the Bay Area. A 4/3 wetsuit is perfectly fine for inside the Bay and kite size will depend on your weight and the win...

Re: Kite destinations with good mountain biking?

San Francisco Bay Area. Marin (a county in the northwest part of the bay) was the birthplace of mountain biking... Which has always struck me as quite ironic given how crappy the mountain biking is in Marin County: there is almost no legal single track there. The best trail in Marin is owned by the...

Re: How many sessions should be expected for a harness?

Still rockin' my original OR Session from 5 or so years ago. It's looking a bit faded and worn, but still solid. Unless you're some super kiter a harness should last at least 7-10 years. Any less is just inferior materials and/or workmanship. I guess I must be a "super kiter" because my OR Session ...

Re: kiter blown away..hit by car ouch

Lets not try and convince the non helmet wearer to wear a helmet. After all. When you argue with an idiot, there are 2 idiots.. Let the non helmet wearers remove themselves from the gene pool. It will do to 2 things. reduce the world population which is too high and slightly increase the intelligen...

Re: kiter blown away..hit by car ouch

Here we go with the helmet BS again. It is extremely unlikely that the reason this guy ended up in the road is because he got knocked out and then dragged. And even if that were true, you can still get knocked out wearing a helmet - there's only a tiny margin where a helmet absorbs energy. The two w...

Re: What is the value of traing kites? I don't get it.

I think it would be awesome if kiteboarding schools would rent out Ocean Rodeo React 4 line trainer kites before you take your first lesson. Maybe give the student a short 10 minute lesson on setting up the trainer kite and then let them have it for a week for $50. The reason I say that is because I...

Re: Do it or don't ? Learn it by yourself...

The most dangerous part of kiting is launching and landing. That is true even when you have somebody else launching your kite. Your problem is that if you kite alone you will have to do a self-launch which is considered an advanced technique that requires very good kite control, something you won't ...

Re: self rescue which is the standard way to do it?

So for #2, you hit the quick release, the kite flags out on one line and you start swimming towards the kite... What happens next? Seems to me the kite would blow away from you as you are trying to swim towards it. I just can't think of any way that makes sense unless as darripah said, there's no wi...
