Re: Doctors on Helmets

Just to clarify: Impacting the water surface is a question of cross-section (area), not volume (try doing a belly-flop instead of diving and you'll see what I mean - same volume, different results). And a helmet doesn't increase the cross-section that much - it's pi R squared, and you're only increa...

Re: Learning without lessons, did you? The stumbling blocks

First: nobody should learn without lessons. At best, you will waste a lot of quality water time struggling to get it together and progress much slower than with lessons. At worst, you can die. That's not a scare tactic, it's a reality you need to be aware of. It is possible to learn without lessons ...

Re: Greatest threat to Access

That's why you build positive relations with officials and start stacking up "good deeds" before the problems start. We have been doing it for years around here. A few examples of a proactive approach: Free or reduced rate lessons for park officials, police, Coast Guard, etc. Beach cleanups ...

Re: how light can we go

@ Peter and Tom, Did you try a race board under the following conditions? On shore wind 8-11 knots Brake about 3-5 feet, choppy sea. Very tough crossing the break in those conditions. ahhh... and standing air waves ("wind holes") because of the buildings on the beach front. There's nobody with a ra...

Re: Goods kites for 7-8 knots??

As mentioned in another thread, the kite is only 1 factor in light wind - there are many more. But for "extreme" light wind, Flysurfer SPEEDs predominate - they're easier to keep in the air, and are designed for very high efficiency. I'm not saying LEI's can't fly in that wind, or that a lightweight...

Re: how light can we go

I think the correct answer is: It depends... The main question is: What do you consider enjoyable? For me, this is easy - riding is almost always more fun than not riding. The only time it sucks is when the wind goes from ridable to not ridable and back again - that's pretty effing frustrating. In t...

Re: weight / projected area = onepossible light wind indicator

C-Quad 8.5m2 1.4 kg 0.164 kg/m2 I guess the silverarrow comes close then. :) I'm not so sure - the C-Quad is extraordinarily efficient (8.5m = FS 15m?), and 1.4kg sounds like it was weighed wet... I get more low-end out of my Flysurfers, but only when I have more sail in the air. (worth it for the ...

wind speed 20 meters high= 7/8 knots
Wind speed 2m high = 15kts.
Wind speed 20m high = 20kts - more than enough to get a 12m going, even with a 200lb rider. Hell, I could probably get a 12m C going in that much wind.
