Re: Never kite too close to an Airport

FAR 101.13 forbids the operation of kites (weighing 5lbs or more) within five miles of the boundary of any airport.

Re: Never kite too close to an Airport

This happens to us all too often on the SFO approach path.

Re: Possible to go downwind faster than the wind?

I agree with you, backward relative to wind is true and sufficient to understand and make it work. Relative to soil is just "easier" to catch the principle IMO because it "works" in whatever cart speed; i will try to detail my reasoning. I also agree on your presentation of distance vs force that i...

Re: Possible to go downwind faster than the wind?

This mechanical link with soil, combined with the calculated blade angle, offers a surface that goes a bit rearward vs the soil... It's true that the propeller produces a sort of virtual surface that can be thought of as moving backward relative to the vehicle, but not relative to the ground. It's ...

Re: What causes jellyfishing?

Leading edge buckling is something that you can kind of control, avoid loading it too much and violently depowering it, whereas tips flaring in and out are more of a constant hassle, rocking back and forth in the window. I'm not getting the L.E. buckling; just the tips flaring in and out and rockin...

Leading edge buckling is a totally different thing imho and the cures for the two are totally different.
Do you know what the cures for each are?

Re: What causes jellyfishing?

I used it for years without it pulsing like this. This is a new development. I figured it must have resulted from wear over time.

What causes jellyfishing?

I've got an OLD Waroo 9M that I used to love, but now it's started jellyfishing and I can hardly stand it. Does this happen to older kites when they get bagged out?

I'm thinking of going after it with the sewing machine, but would love some recommendations of what to try.
