Re: Complete beginner advice..

IMHO, when transitioning from windsurfing to kitesurfing, a key habit you need to unlearn is this: Windsurfing - When things start getting out of control, always hold onto the boom. Why ? To stop getting whacked by the rig. Kitesurfing - When things start getting out of control, let go of the bar. W...

Re: According to Google Trends, kiteboarding is declining in popularity

The good news is that more people are calling it kitesurfing rather than kiteboarding

Re: Kite collapsing on itself during down loop !

What is your weight pākihiroa ? Average ? Real light weight. Around 57 kg. One thing that was a bit different on that particular session with the 8 m was that I had the bar adjusted from the customary 48 cm to 56 cm wide (because I had been using my recently purchased Apollo 8 m, which is a great k...

autodidact = a self-taught person. Just goes to show, even if you are too old to megaloop, you are never too old to learn a new word.

Re: Kite collapsing on itself during down loop !

Thanks for the replies. I think that if (when) this happens again, I will head to shore and do a bit more pumping. Regarding the effects of kite size, some things I am still not sure about are: (1) If it has to do with the lack of rigidity of smaller kites (it seems that the larger diameter leading ...

Kite collapsing on itself during down loop !

Behaviour: The outer thirds of the kite momentarily fold in on themselves during or after the lowest part of the loop, ie: when the kite is climbing back up. Happens quickly and just as quickly, the canopy 'snaps back' into shape. Moderate radius loop. Bar sheeted in moderately - certainly not fully...

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

It is drag, not weight, that will ultimately limit top speed. When lift = drag, no more acceleration and at max speed. Wing sail has got to be way more aerodynamically efficient (configurable shape, greater lift to drag, etc) than a kite and therefore can sail closer to the (apparent) wind. Advantag...

Re: Kitesurfing and Birds – important facts

Three seagulls flew into my kite lines this summer holiday. Never happened before... That's because you were jumping way higher and getting about twice the hang time as the locals. The unsuspecting gulls were simply misjudging your flight path. So they flew into you lines. What we want to kno...

Re: Topic Delete Button!

I thought the thread in question was remarkably civil given the contentiousness of the topic and the strongly held views on both sides. I was actually learning a lot. Granted it was inevitably going to blow up. But it would have been nice to have let it run a bit longer. But, Toby's forum and Toby's...
