Re: Risk vs reward... learning and progression at 40

40 ! I wish I took this up when I was only 40. Now at 60 and still going. Sessions tend to be a little shorter and I wish my knees where in better shape.

Re: Hydrofoil in 8/12 knots at 80Kg(176lbs) rider what kite size better?

I've ridden in 6-8 knots on my 12M Solo but the problem is the lulls. If you get a lull and your kite falls in, you're swimming. No way any kite will re-launch in that light a wind when wet. I stay closer to shore and I have swam in more times than I care to mention. I don't mind too much, it's good...

Shinn Jackson foil 120

Anybody know how much this board weighs? I can't find it in the specs. Looks like a fun board.

Re: how often do you hit fish?

I've hit fish about 6 times in the last year. I keep hoping to bag a salmon for dinner but so far no luck.

Re: First foilboard

My first DIY pocket board, 112 x 40 cm 1.5cm thick wood plus deck pad 5mm. Total wieght: 6.5 kg Board: 3.5 kg Foil: 3 kg Its + 0.5 kg, but feels lighter compared to my regular board when on the beach, probably because of the smaaler size... I not yet had the chance to try it so will update on water...

Re: Max wing thickness for ultra low takeoff

Alright, new plan. Instead of g10 I'm thinking of doing balsa core with carbon as it will be slightly cheaper, easier to shape, and much lighter. Thanks for all the input so far everyone. Going to aim for 1000-1100 cm^2 surface area and ~20mm wing thickness. Having contours built into the core mate...

Re: Best way not to injure yourself : go strapless !

On my DIY wood foil, the board floats on its side so going strapless is easy.

Re: first foil build advice

My first homemade foil uses a 24" birch mast and fuselage. Only a small bit of carbon fiber on the fuselage to reduce twisting flex between mast and wing. The wing is 1/2" plywood approx 7"x17" shaped and coated with resin to make water proof. This is attached to an old Cabinha double agent twin-tip...

Re: Foil Board DIY

I recently built this board from 5 layers of 0.2" thick plywood from Home Despot. I routered out the 3 inner layers to help reduce weight but I left material in the center of the board to support the foil attachment area and the center of the board where I stand. It's about 10.5 lbs so still on the ...

Re: Budget low tech kite hydrofoil DIY build a long

I'm new to this DIY foil obsession. My foil has a birch mast/fuse and plywood wings, it's really slow and ugly but amazingly it mostly works and is great for learning. I'm working on model 2, faster more stable good for strapless riding. You all have so much more experience in all this, maybe you c...
