Flying Wing Commentary

Removing a hydrofoils stabilizer and riding the stock wing ie riding stabless increases the control requirements of the rider as the wing is unstable since nothing counters the wings center of pressure as it moves around the center of gravity. Furthermore there will be limits to the wings ability to...

Re: Holes in aluminum mast

You can restore the mast however it will be slightly shorter and heavier. Cut the mast below the bend Fill the mast with epoxy resin and silica powder. You can fill the whole mast or just the first 20 or 30 cm. Suggest you just fill the whole mast as the aluminum strength is already suspect. Remove ...

Re: Flysurfer Sonic FR 15 Meter Tip Fold Problem Solved

As mentioned the kite flew for approximately 40 hours with no further wing tip fold. However this kite was launched in an onshore wind in very restrictive space due to higher tides and up against approx a 100ft tree line. Since wind begins to separate from the water surface at a 10 to 1 ratio from t...

Re: Flysurfer Sonic FR 15 Meter Tip Fold Problem Solved

Reference the kite mentioned at the beginning of this post. After clearing the vents from station 11-12 on the line plan to the drain tip a third time, the tip fold problem has not returned after four days of heavy use. Previously the kite had this problem every day used for the last 4 months or fro...

Flysurfer Sonic FR 15 Meter Tip Fold Problem Solved

Light and Frost(L&F) was asked to assist an owner of a Sonic FR 15 Meter kite in solving persistent tip fold problems. The kite would sometimes fly normally and then begin folding up at the tip latter during the session. Once the tip fold occurred the problem would remain until flight termination. S...

Long-board Kite Hydrofoil Tests

Light and Frost has installed a 70cm curved mast on a long board then took the board out with a kite and tuned the fuselage angle on the mast. The wing/fuselage/stabilizer was previously tested on a short board, so functionality of those components was not an issue here. For those interested in such...

Re: T-Tails on 50 and 70 cm masts

Light and Frost(L&F) has done further testing of T-Tail configurations on short 70cm masts in rough water and heavy chop. To facilitate the testing process L&F fabricated a very large wing to slow the board speed down to the point where the wing/stabilizer/fuselage could be easily observed during wa...

Re: Best way to make a prototype

Light and Frost is not sure how you are making these components however size usually equates to time necessary to complete and to cost. You are faced with two major questions which can really only be answered by time on the components. 1. Are the materials chosen and construction techniques structur...

Re: What wood for mast core?

Light and Frost has made 10 masts to date from 50cm to 90cm and from straight to curved. We use 3cm plywood and then glass over the plywood shape. The center of the mast provides very little strength. You also do not need to use carbon fiber. We do not like mono structures like carbon fiber(CF) due ...

One Stop fill coat for wings and masts

Light and frost has been using the following process to obtain a one-stop fill coat on wing and mast surfaces which requires very little sanding. This process works on flat, dihedral and anhedral wing shapes and on both sanded plywood and fiberglass. For reference all our wings are made of 2 and 3 c...
