Re: Learning to kite in the SF Bay Area

My two cents. Although it's generally true that you would drift downwind while changing boards, once you learn how to go upwind, this effect is not that material. Just think of all the people you see jumping... they are going straight downwind as soon as they leave the water, and then they quickly m...

Re: Learning to kite in the SF Bay Area

Cool, sounds good.

Can you put in fins into the slots on the other side of your board, so the fin setup is symmetrical? From the pictures it seems like you could make your board into a twintip that way.

Mako is very very nice though.

Re: Learning to kite in the SF Bay Area

Cool, hope this all helps. What kind of kite do you have right now? Here's how I would prioritize: 1) First, a used 12M kite. I weight about 190lbs, and I have a 15M, 12M and 8M kite (as well as some older kites). In the bay, I'd say I use the 12M 65% of the time, 8M 30%, and the 15M 5% of the time,...

Re: Learning to kite in the SF Bay Area

A few ideas: Call Nat at Edge Kiteboarding. I haven't spoken to him lately, but he was doing the Sherman upwind boat earlier this season. http://www.edgekiteboarding.com. You are right that Sherman is not a good place to kite if you can't stay upwind yet. Try 3rd avenue, which is generally windier t...

Re: I need a seat harness: What's the preferred?

I love the Mystic Force Shield (Mine is an 09 I think). Feel the same way that tp feels about the nitrous. All the pull is on the hips, not the back. Fits great, lightweight.

Re: Peru help, Please!!

We stayed at Las Olas in Mancora, and they had wi fi in the common areas until about 9-10pm, if you have your own laptop. Rooms are nice and the location is right on the beach. I'm pretty sure there are internet cafes in town. I speak Spanish, but I think you can get by in Peru with English-- not ev...

Re: Peru help, Please!!

I was in Mancora and Paracas (among other places in Peru) last December. I wasn't able to visit the coast in between Mancora and Lima, but Pacasmayo is supposed to be amazing for wave kitesurfing. Puerto Chicama is famous for surfing-- both are very long famous breaks. If you are taking the bus up t...

Re: Torn between which style board to buy.

My two cents. You can definitely boost with a strapped surfboard, as long as it's a kite specific surfboard, that is made/reinforced with stronger material. I have a Dereck Camacho custom and boost with it all the time, and most of the riders I see with directionals do a lot of boosting. Do a search...

Re: my 1 year kitesurfing world tour

Wow, everyone's travel plans sound amazing. kmagill, I saw on your map that you plan to go to Morocco. Essaouira is really nice, but I also recommend that you go to Dakhla if you love kiting and can fit it into the schedule. Phenomenally steady strong winds, and a really unique place that feels very...

Re: What seat harness for kiter with back problem?

Like some others here, I switch between the Mystic Warrior waist and Force Shield seat harnesses, which are both very ergonomic, and sit very differently on the body. I like switcihng it up because the harnesses have different pressure points, so it distributes the loads more. If I'm sore from a lon...
