Re: Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

This is less about maintenance and more about treatment but I thought some might find it worth considering. I recently suffered a couple of serious nerve impingement's, out of the blue but likely related to past injuries. One was cervical and the other below a trigger point in a trap. They developed...

Re: Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

Interesting concept and approach, one I wouldn't have thought of. It sounds like a worthwhile activity. I am not sure if this would be beneficial or not although it does help with kiting related strains which are common enough. I lost most of my hearing in one ear in 2015 as a result of too many fre...

Re: Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

You are welcome, I was happy to find and share it. There are lots of us older kiters on here to provide input on the subject. That is a great kiting run to 82! I am a big free diver myself but I also got scuba certified in 1971 picked up my instructors in 1976. Diving concepts helped me in the early...

Re: Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

Good points Abel. I learned to moderate durations and avoiding more extreme conditions when healing from injuries. This should work well going forward as well. Your insights about hydrofoiling are intriguing. Do others feel hydrofoiling is lower impact physiologically? Historically guys would talk a...

Re: Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

Nicely summarized FLandOBX. I think it is important to focus on physiological age in active pursuits. Critically, adjusting how we pursue things, to maximize enjoyment while working to minimize the downsides. The author gives older folks credit for improving judgment and analysis, that should help i...

Aging and Kiting (and Related Considerations)

Let’s sum it up by saying “experiences will vary.“ I came across this presentation recently and some of the points resonated with me. It’s a well organized and thought-provoking presentation particularly for us folks longer in the saddle. At the same time for younger people who may have potentially ...

Re: Vacation in the Keys?

What time of year will you be traveling? Some times of year are better for wind than others. Are you interested in snorkeling alone or scuba diving as well? As Todd said, the Keys are a flat water destination absent significant waves in large measure thanks to the sheltering effect of the Florida Re...

Re: Kite rescue - kite vs chopper

The rest of the comments in the thread are worth reading, along with the photos which didn't transfer in the original quote at: https://kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2412555 This is my response: That was unfortunate, what seems to have been unnecessary rescue. Although the water was likely quite...

Kite rescue - kite vs chopper

I just saw this in the main forum and it seemed like a good topic to keep around for reference. Here is some Sunday action from NYC.. A fellow kiter dropped his 10m Soul and could not relaunch. I saw him swimming, grepped a door from a friend and came to the rescue, flying 15m Soul.. We were 100m fr...

Re: Kite rescue - kite vs chopper

That was unfortunate, what seems to have been unnecessary rescue. Although the water was likely quite cold and the rescuers may not have understood or appreciated the self-rescue you were performing. Close to shore but not close enough to avoid this mess from happening. It is important to use the ri...
