Re: hydrofoil at max speed limit

Obvious beginner question: What happens when you push a foil beyond its maximum speed? Hmmm, there IS not such thing as a specific foils maximum speed  The more power you can "invest" - the faster it can go. There is a practical maximum speed though, the speed the really good riders are able ...

Re: wings for using smallest kite possible

Snip... I'm looking to a bigger step down to slow and fun for some conditions. My thinking is 1. Light conditions. 2. Choppy, wavy, and confused water where slower speeds are more manageable, probably windy. Snip... Amazing so different we are... For light conditions the big wings are awesome. But ...

Re: wings for using smallest kite possible

If I might give my both practical, but also theoretical input on this (hope it does not bore too much, I will leave the calculations out at least...) windmaker is actually correct, bigger wings will have more lift, but the same amount of more drag (both squared with the speed) - thus almost equal in...

Re: wings for using smallest kite possible

One note on this: The reason gliders are so extremely high AR, is not really to achieve more lift, but to achieve higher glide ratio. Higher AR means less drag especially when flying at high lift, but not really more overall lift - so when soaring in a thermal bubble you dont need the high AR as eve...

Re: wings for using smallest kite possible

Disagree with this...

IMO the really big wings will make you start earlier with a smaller LEI kite, as said in my post, as the apparent wind does not have the same effect as on high aspect foil kites, so you lose more than you gain, using smaller/flatter race wings.

Re: Nigel no mates

DukeSilver, good story well told :hut: and precisely what one experienced quite often indeed, a lot when it was "new", but still sometimes when riding at the same spots. It takes time for these changes, here all the "slightly sceptical but still interested" ones has started foiling now, so it gets b...

Re: wings for using smallest kite possible

I think: As the question is not "how low can you go", but what will make you able to ride with the smallest kite possible in given conditions - then no doubt, a huge wing, as high AR as possible, very cambered - combined with a huge floaty board, will definitelyl make you go the earliest with the sm...

Re: concept air pulsion

Hmmm, I would say you can use any bar for any kite, no doubt.

Only the few and rare (non race nor hydrofoil specific) loaded 5 line kites needs a specific bar as far as I can estimate

So any bar will work :thumb:

Re: Ideal line length

Agree with Pedro, so use your new 26 m lineset for allround, all conditions not hugely powered, and then add around 5 meter extensions when really light :thumb: If you dont wanna spoil your 7 m extension you can also use these of course, on your 26 m; it will begin to feel sluggish somehow when too ...

Re: Going even bigger foil kite, what size?

Everytime I and my friends have tried back to back same model foil kites we have chosen 15m over 18m for free riding / twin tip (speed3, speed4, sonic1 and sonic2). 15 being more agile is easier to fly on ultra low wind practically giving same low end for 70-110kg riders. Agree 100 % with this :thu...
