Re: Video of Ram Air Inversion Disaster

I also updated ... to raise awareness of foil self-rescue techniques. It's sad that "joriws" felt compelled to share his propaganda after all of these years. Ram airs are simply NOT SAFE for self-rescue. After 45 min they can be deadly. Here are some examples: ALL ram airs eventually become hopeles...

Re: Gear advice for light wind

The *best* light wind setup for you would be a massive kite (e.g., 19 m Edge) and a large, buoyant surfboard, e.g, a 7-8 ft mini mal. Despite the propaganda from ram lovers and hydrofoil lovers, this sort of setup will get you going marginally earlier than anything else. Whatever you do, please don'...

Re: Unnecessary "Rescues"

There have been a spate of unnecessary "rescues" involving emergency services (helicopters, ambulances, police, etc). These "rescues" have been called-in by concerned members of the public, usually little old grannies with cell phones. Most kitesurfers are self-sufficiency freaks: uncomplaining and...

Re: Kite rescue - kite vs chopper

Ram Air Kites can be VERY dangerous in rescue situations. ALL kiters experiences a few gear failures (eg broken lines) and COMPLETE wind dropouts every year. Inflatables can be "sailed" (self-rescued) or swum to shore. If things are REALLY bad, the inflatable structure can support your weight, eg h...

Re: Kite rescue - kite vs chopper

This may not have happened if the guy used inflatable kites. An unlaunchable ram air kite in the water is inherently less safe than an inflatable. This may have been one of the considerations leading to the "rescue". In addition, the Soul Ram Air kite has been destroyed. This may not have happened w...

Re: Predictions for LEI's in 2022

This is good stuff, get the popcorn out and have a snack as you indulge in this story. I particularly like the part about race kites and the “current” political controversy about them. :thumb: You're welcome Trent. Just let me know if you want any more info about ram air kites. Pumpy :pump:
