Re: High boosting kites

My brain tells me you should be able to jump higher on a high aspect sle compared to a C kite. Why? because you can ride way overpowered send it then power up. With less depower on the C you can't ride as overpowered. I sort of agree that the technique is the most important but the type of kite make...

Re: Struck Wind Dumb** or Throw Another Kiter On The Barbie

The sqaul lines that come through here for the most part are very obvious. The repeatable squalls which are generally smaller in size, say several km wide, stand out like dogs balls. they are generally stand alone with no other cloud mass. they generally travel at the wind speed. I spent an entire 2...

Re: Struck Wind Dumb** or Throw Another Kiter On The Barbie

Ok one more point. Understanding turbulence created by upwind objects and how downwind objects can impact apon up wind. Alot of people think downwind objects are irrelavent. however depending on the size they can impact upwind. An example is a 2 large hills intersected by a valley in the middle. The...

Re: Struck Wind Dumb** or Throw Another Kiter On The Barbie

I have wondered at times about snow squalls and kiters. I've seen and been in plenty of pretty nasty sustained winds and the odd severe squall in high alpine areas. There was the one snow kiter killed years ago in Alberta Beach in a squall. It is good you are familiar with the phenomena in your are...

Re: Struck Wind Dumb** or Throw Another Kiter On The Barbie

Well I think the need to fullfill the kiting addiction can overpower many kiters rational and go out in the incorrect conditions. I think the key too is to understand your local conditions. then you can possibly ride relatively safely in marginal conditions. For example locally we will have squally ...

Re: Quitting Kiting

i sometimes think that the newer "safer kites" can potentially be more dangerous. I'm not talking about the quick releases but the depower at the bar. the newbie kiter can be lulled into a false sence of security thinking his kite has an enourmous wind range. eg 15-30 knots for a 11-12m sle he eithe...

Re: "Thrill to Risk Ratio"

i haven't found anything with a better risk/reward ratio. i came out of DH mountainbiking. The thrill is as high if not higher particularily when you are hitting extreme lines. but the risk is many times higher. crash mtbing and it will hurt. crash at high speed or going big and it will hurt even mo...

Re: dry hair session

hahaha... now thats and afro. also i think a good reason why it was a dry hair session was that it was windy as hell. most of the spray off the board that usually gets chucked into your face simply hauled arse down wind. i know what your saying. if your not crashing then your not pushing hard enough...

Re: Quitting Kiting

Theres a lot of kitesurfers that are scared of land kiting and think its very DANGEROUS. infact you break most kitesurfing rules landkiting. But you just need to apply a different set of rules than kite surfing and you can do it in a relatively safe manner. infact you can be considerably safer land ...

Re: Quitting Kiting

You are right kiting is dangerous. Land Kiting is more dangerous that kitesurfing. I landboard and kitesurf. I will do so either land or water up to 45 knot gusts. Above that i don't have kites small enough. On land you need to be even more acutely aware of the conditions than on water. As an exampl...
