I've recently got hold of a second hand board (see other thread) and when I bought it, I knew that one of the fins had been replaced, but when i looked the fin up it appears to be a windsurfing fin. and also 2cm shorter than the fin on the other side. The silver rear strap is directly above the bolt which you screw the rear fin in. you can see the fin bolts for the two front fins in the pic (either side of the infinity logo)

What you describe doesn't sound good... Have you flown any other kites in this same field? Flying in fields is generally a bad idea, especially if there are sizable trees/houses upwind or downwind of you. There can be lots of turbulence, which could quite easily cause what you describe. Slack certainly helps in getting the bar toward your hip. You can of course pull your hips (and the rest of your body) toward your bar - which requires much more effort!.
