When did the accident occur? I am not sure of the date but it was several years ago. OK, fair enough to say that it raised scrutiny because he did not make full and obvious disclosure, but then again I don't think he's hiding anything either. His name/history is pretty well recognized by many sailors and almost anyone who is/or was into sailboarding, many of whom have crossed over to kiteboarding. But the other points that I think are important include how the voting process was conducted and whether this was truly an informed decision. And maybe the most important is the concept of the "pipeline"...Yes kitesurfing is growing and is accessibe to a fair number of people, but entry in the sport is generally not safe until kids are past 10 years old/90+ lbs. With sailing the kids can start earlier in very well organized schools, yacht clubs, sailing clubs, camps where they learn seamanship and racing skills at a very early age...which I think is a much stronger pipeline into sailboarding. If you watch this video I think it might give some appreciation of this. http://youtu.be/4l6wIzg3SKI

I like a simple little conflict disclosure, such as:
I am in the windsurfing business for many years and have a very significant financial interest in the presence of windsurfing in the Olympic Games. I also have a child who is an Olympic level windsurfer and has a significant interest in the future of Olympic windsurfing.
Then proceed to bash kiting as much as desired. But at least inform the reader that there are significant financial incentives to bash kiting in an effort to support windsurfing. His opinion is not invalidated by his conflicts of interest, but an unwillingness to disclose these conflicts reflects on his integrity and may discredit his position.

Thanks to others I might actually have a clue as to the reason for Nevin Sayer opening his stupid mouth.
Being an ex Windsurfer still in possession of equipment I actually respected that nice person until I see this crap. Bash kiting because windsurfing gets some kind of rejection issue in the olympics (dont know the extent of it....I had to read the article and it was to boring to complete!). He was a world class windsurfer and it appears he couldnt handle kiting. Go back to windsurfing you wimp!
Hope I dont have it wrong or I might have to apologize.

Nevin Sayre has a point given the context and where it is displayed. As I see it, apart from vote irregularities, too soon is what he appears to be saying. If it is proved right for whatever reason then there will be a lott of hobbled folk from shooting themselves in the foot...ISAF and kiters. All for their 15 mins! Vanity and ego going hand in hand looking just as pretty as the kites they are on.... On the flip side , just think of the fiesta all the wellwishers and "what we can learn from this" brigade" could have with such a high profile debacle.

RickI wrote: I am sorry you were hurt Nevin and wish you all speed in a complete recovery. What happened in your accident? It looks like a bad one which we can try to learn from. I am aware of one kiting fatality in kiteboarding competition worldwide, that of Silke Gornt in 2002. Many factors were present in her tragic loss key among them the lack of effective quick releases and kite leashes. These devices have been developed and spread through the sport in large measure due to her accident. Procedures, rules and equipment have vastly improved in the last ten years in kiting. By comparison, how many people have been killed worldwide bicycling in the last decade? It looks like over 7000 between 2000 and 2009 in the USA alone.* Still bicycling is a big part of the Olympics. * http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811386.pdfI hope the Olympic Committee reconsiders the expulsion of windsurfing and allows both windsurfing and kiting to occur in the games. It seems Solvig Sayre was a strong prospect for the Olympic windsurfing team. To suddenly lose the ability to complete after all the hard work, dedication and sacrifice to attain such proficiency is an awful thing. I wish both Solvig and yourself the best in getting through this, rapid, complete healing in your case and the ability to compete in windsurfing for Solvig. I believe both sports should be allowed to participate. EDIT: If this is an old accident Nevin from which you healed from long ago, it would be good to tell us that up front. That along with your involvement with BIC and Olympic related windsurfing sales. Advocating your sport is a reasonable thing but to do so in a biased destructive way, possibly threatening access for BOTH sports is a bad move. I have been involved in many negotiations with authorities in trying to preserve access for kiting and windsurfing. We often are the same to regulators. Please think over your approach to this as you could harm both kiting and inadvertently your sport of windsurfing fairly easily. DickI. I see you are at it again. Dont let the facts get in the way of a good story and self promotion do you! In respect of S. Gorldt. most were well aware of the very obvious problem at that time and it was being addressed relative. With all that respect etc. you could have at least spelt her name right! Your cycling analogy is ridiculous...so how many of your 7000 were in high profile competition...(dont bother answering that) Get a grip.

This gives an idea of Nevin's role in the windsurfing development program. http://www.windsurfingtour.com/?p=2181The Bic Techno 293 is considered the best development program for young sailors (they say 5 to 17 years old) who want to progress to windsurf in the Olympics. Its a very good series on its own for 16 year and under racers and very popular. The most difficult thing for kiting to provide is an equivalent 12 to 16 year old kite racing program for 40 youngsters to race safely through the start line. It is possible to do, but it would be much more difficult to have that running smoothly and safely than with windsurf gear. If Nevin had been less sensationalist and stayed with describing the current safety situation, he could still have made his point just as well.

RickI wrote: By comparison, how many people have been killed worldwide bicycling in the last decade? It looks like over 7000 between 2000 and 2009 in the USA alone.* Still bicycling is a big part of the Olympics. Not the best comparison, as there's a significant difference between competitive cyling and taking a bike to school/work (which will be where most of those injuries occurred). A better parallel would be boxing, which carries the potential for serious injury (without proper training, supervision and equipment) and is also a sport that many parents would rather not see their pre-teen kids involved in. A few thoughts: 1. Enough with the "windsurfing is cancelled" crowing. It's unseemly, it makes you look like a graceless ass and it pisses people off. If you're going to gloat (prematurely) about the End of Windsurfing, you have no right to complain when anyone takes a shot at your sport. 2. It's pretty clear that the majority of that part of ISAF that understands the difference between windsurfing and kitesurfing wants to keep windsurfing. There's a significant chance that the decision to "cancel windsurfing" may be reversed. See point 1. 3. As MikeBirt and edt point out, there are too many dinghy classes in the Olympics. Taking out one of them is not going to have any impact on grass roots dinghy sailing. If something needs to be dropped from the wind-powered watersports in order to accommodate the kites, that's where the ISAF should be looking. They won't, because ISAF is a sailing organisation, and kiters and pole huggers (who have more in common with each other than the dinghy drivers) are busy taking pops at each other rather than lobbying as a coherent bloc. I refer you, again, to point 1. OK, rant over. Continue.

..............................................The key word here is SURFING ..........................................................WindSURFING ...........................................................Kite SURFING NOT WindBOARDING or KiteBOARDING that was considered for Olympics The new sport in the Olympics in on a DIRECTIONAL just like windsurfing (but way more fun IMO) Almost 100% of fatalities over the years have occured from kiteBOARDERS on twin-tips So yes teach the young future Olympians to Kitesurf ..and race...it is safe, fun, new and exciting I do not think the selected Olympians Kitesurfers athletes will have to wear mandatory helmets ................................................. .............................................
