In light of the recent tragedy, I'm sure event organizers are taking a closer look at their contest safety rules. However, I don't know if they will necessarily start requiring competitors to wear kite leashes.
Perhaps we can start something of a grass roots movement to persuade event organizers to require kite leashes in contests effective immediately.
Surely there is an appropriate and effective way for us to petition the right people to do the right thing. Now is the best time to maximize our potential influence on these contests. Silke's fatal accident has the focus of the worldwide kiteboarding community at this time. Let's honor her by taking action to make our voice of safety improvements heard.
If someone can post schedules of upcoming contests, we would have a place to start. If someone has information listing event organizers or other appropriate addresses, we could start a simple email petition to these influencial people. I don't mean to incite inappropriate flaming or blame. Rather, I'm suggesting that we simply develop a way for us to directly make our voices heard on the subject of requiring kite leashes at contests.
Worldwide kiteboarding associations should consider using their influence to effect positive change in regard to kite leashes also. However, this approach may require more time to get the ball rolling. In any case, a grass roots effort to petition whoever is organizing the next contests seems like a reasonable and effective way for us to channel our collective energy to immediately improve competition safety.
Please help this cause by posting whatever information you may have regarding upcoming contests and email contacts for the people in charge. Let's keep this civil and not turn it into a vehicle for venting our intense emotions.

Contest at Cabarete very soon. These people have the chance to turn things around with the kite leash issue.
Does anyone have a website link or email to this contest?
Anyone who really beleives in all the TALK on this subject has one good chance to tell the people who could turn things around. Email the contest management and voice your opinion. If we just complain among ourselves and don't speak up to the people making decisions, it's all just hot air...

This year it will arrange most of its events in Germany but next year it will be all over Europe. Two agencies are working on the organisation and financing of the tour (Brandguides and AMC). They are planning a junior tour as well to get young riders into competitions and to promote this great sport.
Safety and fair play are the most important aspects of the competition. Unsafe riders will be disqualified. Leeward riders have right of way, therefore Windward riders should not jump when a leeward rider is close to them. When crossing paths a windward rider should keep his kite up high wile a leeward rider should keep his kite down. Riders must not change course to obstruct another rider. Riders should stay clear of the competition area when not competing. (Infringements on the above rules could result in disqualification).
