MAKA has been formed by representing the eastern Atlantic US states of Washington,D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and North Carolina.

The opening message follows:

My Fellow Kiters,

Just a few notes about our glorious organization:

1. On July 31, 2002, the Mid-Atlantic Kiteboarding Association, Inc.
was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state
of Virginia. What does this mean? Well, I guess we are legit now.
We plan to affiliate with the AKA in the near future. Hopefully more
organization and an event or two will follow. IT will also look good
on my, I mean our, resume.

2. One of the main purposes of MAKA is to share and disseminate
information. So if you have a kite-related question, story or
anything else, please post it on the group. The more people who
post, the more interest is generated. To quote a lame phrase, "A
rolling stone gathers no moss."

3. If you aren't a member of the AKA--BECOME ONE. The insurance
provided by membership is (in our opinion) essential. Visit

4. Safety--Yeah we know--you're sick of hearing it. Well get used
to it--we will always advocate safety. If you know someone getting
into kiting--MAKE SURE they get proper instruction. MAKA officially
recommends multi-day courses for beginning riders.

5. Protecting launches--Another purpose of MAKA is to create a
coalition of riders to stand as a unified voice for continued access
at riding spots. Should you become aware of an "endangered" area,
contact the group as soon as possible. A preemptive strike on our
part will help ensure that we need not fix extensive collateral
damage after an all-out ban.

6. Get your kite buddies to join the group. It's free, they can
pick the "no email" option, and at least we can contact all kiters in
the region if necessary.

7. That's all.

Kite On,

As transcribed by Brett Gibson

It may take quite a few kiteboarding associations worldwide to preserve access for riders. The AKA Kiteboarding Committee would like to help.

Here is to shredding for a long time to come!
