They won't give up the snowboard outline eh... These things cant work in waves or heavy chop can they?

Actually, they work miracles. I was just in acapulco, Mexico last weekend and was using my AX 160 with my warrior 9.3 in 15-22 knots, with huge waves and it was great. You have no idea how upwind they go, you will outpoint anyone at your beach.
Give them a try and you will see what I am talking about.
