Forget Slovenia. On the Italian side of the border there are a few scrappy spots. Northern Croatia doesn't rate much either. The coasts are rocky & the beaches are pretty rocky or stoney too. There are a couple of recommended spots further south but don't even think about it in August as it is insanely busy on the Croatian coast until all the tourists leave.
