thanks for the link CAJ -
this part is very sobering,
snip from article.......
Despite reports that the safety of nesting birds was at the heart of the ban, an earlier statement by former Padre Island Superintendent Jock Whitworth cited concern over the "extreme" nature of kiteboarding as the primary reason for the ban. "Mostly it's the safety aspect," Whitworth told the Caller-Times. His comment was in reference to the kiteboarding death of local expert Peter Nordby.

@ questions come to mind
1. What do the locals have to say? Is the ban on a used spot or is it not the prime area anyway? Speak out
2.Interesting about reference to Hatteras for national park system. I wonder if its the rally call for all.
comment
I think a license is a somewhat positive idea, as it should improve safety for beginners, but it does not speak to some who would abuse the privelege of access anyway despite skills. reference to Kite power post and others of a similar nature
Think about that one.....

wow..thanks for the head's up...very interesting + sobering article indeed...lists many reasons for the ban(usual suspects)...and this sets a precedent for the National Park system here in the US....Now the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in NC is asking for a copy to check it out....EKKKKKK
Time to unite for sure...!!

Well crap,
It's the safety issue mostly he said,
What's unsafe? kitesurfing, Why, because they can see us fucking up, why because we crowd kite, shore jump, we are HIGH profile, get in the face of the man and the man will act, bicker with beach users and the man gets his ear bent,
The answer to bans is to be the lowest possible profile, stay away from the shore, spread out don't act like wind-surfers in the line-up, and the big secret to avoid bans is to not slam your head into stuff and die, this is the sort of thing that is hard to ignore.
So realize a few basics, show off and be noticed, not good
Be aware of yourself first, never call the cops, and no beach training if folks are around.
And the biggy don't smash into stuff and die

For someone unfamiliar with SPI but thinking of going there to kite, does this ban cover all the good kiting spots or some of them or what? It will also be interesting to see how a person will go about getting "certified" as a safe kiteboarder should that come to pass as a requirement for certain areas. Hey Fok, would you be interested in being a "certifier"?

Okay I was literally planning on buying tickets today to go to SPI first week of March. WTF is this? Is this a real ban or is this like the Maui ban that really just meant setting up new rules?
Bottom line: Are they stopping people from going out right now?
Also, it sounds like from the article that this includes the entire shoreline, is this true?

Chem-O,
I fucking ban all my friends, they are BAD NEWS, but they are rock stars,
you can not win, the worst thing in the world is an instructor, I hate -um,
they suck, just MHO, the only severe injury we ever had was because of standard beach training, we outlawed instruction for cash, we are not model citizens we are devoe, thank GOD no one realizes how fucked up we are, but hey we are smart enough to outlaw cash hounds, we train friends only and only for free and only if they are waterman already, no history no kite.
We have a small community 10 kiters only, usually only 5 on the water,
and that's too many in my opinion, we throw down hard on visitor kiters we tell-um make us happy or get the f*** out, our group name is SMILE BITCH,,, it stands for>(Social Management Incident Limitation Experiment Brotherhood Insisting Total Cooperation Homes.)
I'd ban everybody

I believe the rules + regs on Maui were set-up for a very special circumstance, and that is an International Airport is EXTREMELY close to the kite area....I believe that's ONE of the reasons the FAA got involved...
Now we have big brother ( NAtional PArk service), the feds..steppin in....down at Padre.... I don't think there are any major airports to close proximity like in MAui.....I was hoping that some of the shops or local folks down there can give us more details + specifics....
This should be a big wake up call.........tick tock
