Kami - I live in Austin, which is about 3.5 hours from the beach in Corpus Christi.
But Corpus has great wind, basically all year long.
Lots of coastline gulf surf, and lots of barrier islands that provide tons of flatwater kiting.

3.5 hours one way? I've done that for a day trip a few times... really pisses me off when you get skunked though :(

Pretty lucky here, I guess. Went home for Xmas and kited the Estuary - blech. Waiting for the tide sucked but the flat water was dreamy.

We have lakes here in Austin and surrounding area.
Closest lake to my house is a half mile away, so I am lucky.
Next kiting spot is across town 20-40 minutes depending on traffic.
Two other lakes an hour and a half away.
And the coast is three and a half hours.
Lots of good choices and variety.

The windsurfers can keep it. On that side of the island the wind is super gusty compared to the other side of the laguna madre. We have some secret spots here that provide awesome slicks with pure glass even if the wind is nuking so there are much better spots around here for kiting.

J - I think he was asking about the Gulf side across from Bird, at the National Seashore.
I got tossed out of Bird for putting up a kite years ago also.

There is so much room to kite in Corpus, it's awesome.
