near my house, there's a river, and there's a 'step' that is 4 mt high.
its interesting the feeling you get if you jump from the top.
at first I go down slowly, but then I start going upwind.
I only try this when the wind is straight onshore, so that I have an ascendent flow to help me glide
kites are just small paragliders, or vicebersa

Try longer lines and sinusing the kite may be that way you get more height
