Northern NSW - Kite Spots ?

Postby Ioz » Tue Jan 27, 2004 6:02 am

We are doing a kitesurfing trip across OZ and have now arrived to the Blue mountains West of Sydney. We are keen to check out the better kitesurfing spots North of Sydney through to Byron Bay. If some crew could tune us in of some of the better kiting destinations that pick up the most wind and waves that would be excellent.

p.s

Streaky Bay in South Australia rocks as a kite surfing destination, heaps of different set ups and waves. Dasha is the local kiter who is good value, if you go ask for him down the pub of give us a call, he would welcome new kiters to the area.

Regards
Ian

ok, starting from Sydney

Sydney's Northern beaches :
Longreef (SSE-ESE),
Narrabeen (NE),
Palm Beach (SE-NE)

Central Coast :
Umina (SE),
Norah Head (SE or NE)

Totally recommended --> Jimmy's Beach, Hawksnest (NE - SE) Offshore in a NE but if you get in trouble you'll simply end up at Nelsons Bay

I've rarely been much further north but Lennox Heads, Flatrock and Clarks beach at Byron are all worth checking out. (I've also heard that Noosa is good, but I've never been kiting there)

Jimmy's rocks in a NE though, you wont want to leave. Simply walk across the beach to Sandy point if you want waves. If you have a 4wd, you can drive onto the beach at Mungo Brush, do a 20km downwinder and end up at Jimmys for the rest of the day. (in a NEster) Some poor sod will have to drive the car down for you though.

Have a great trip!

I've heard that caves beach near swansea is awesome when it's S/SE. South of Port Macquarie are a whole stack of beaches and rivers that you could spend days playing with. Just stick to the coast along there and keep an eye out. I've done plenty of surfing trips all the way up to Byron but places that are good for surfing are probably gusty and not so good for kiteboarding, so I couldn't really recommend anywhere else. Good luck though and hope you have fun, sounds like a sick trip :thumb:

Lets not speak about Jimmy's. Would not want to get the gang to come after you. :!:

oops, you're right.

Ioz, forget about Jimmys, it's gusty as hell and there's sharks all over the place.

Had a good time at the Iluka peninsula - good in NE. The next bay along from Shark bay (no sharks in that one haha) very big fun

Turn off is a couple of kms north of the sugar mill beside the Clarence river drawbridge (turn off the pacific highway, I think the sign says Woombah - a small settlement on the way to the peninsula)

Lennox Head, flat rock is also really good, and sharpes beach also fun - you see it from the road.

Had good wave riding at Yamba too - main beach, but you have to wait till its blown out otherwise too many surfers.
