Vacation in May - SPI or PV or Playa del Carmen?

Postby chicagokitesurfer » Wed Feb 18, 2004 9:58 pm

Anyone know what the winds will be like in South Padre, Puerto Vallarta and Playa (just south of cancun) in the late May-early June timeframe???

Thanks in advance!

Playa is no longer reliable in these dates, and Puerto Vallarta i nuking, haven't been to SPI, but heard it is awesome. Puerto Vallarta would be a great choice.

SPI or Corpus are both good choices in May.

Andres, so PV is nuking, eh? That's good news. I am assuming this is the north side (puerto Nuevo), right? What is the season for PV? April to August like SPI? Also, since I'm 185, what would the kitesize be....should I leave my 20m at home?

fernmanus, is SPI a cheap place? $50 a night hotel? Looking for inexpensive, too....

hey, puerto vallarta gets 12-25 knots during this time, from january to june, early july i believe, i will get you more exact info from my friends there. Yes the area to ride is Nuevo Vallarta, and there is something for everyone, from cheap to expensive. Not sure about not bringing the 20, let me check for you ok?

I've been to Bucerias, north of PV in April, and SPI in May. Both are good during that the time of the year.

Bucerias is primarily on-shore thermal wind that kicks in around noon and backs off around 4-ish. The Puerto Nuovo launch is side-on but not that much better. Definitely not a place for newbie. I was mainly on 16m with few 12m days. The wind is very consistent here. There's a private kite club north end of town with a day charge fee of US $15-20. The town is pretty cool and good cheap food. You can catch a bus from the airport for $2 (I think?).

As for SPI that's a good time to go. It seems like it blows all the time. The main spot is at the convention center. You pretty much drive right up to the beach and launch. I was only there 3 days but mainly kited at Corpus. If you have time Corpus has some killer spots.

Good Luck!
