People still don't get it!!!
I think you are missing the point.
Tomatkins' desire is for his nephew is to spend more time on the water then on the road. When Sauvies is on it's 40 minutes from Portland the coast is atleast 2 hours.
The coast may be great kiting but due to the drive it's really only an option on the weekend and not after work. Also I would say that Sauvies is a better for a newbie - no big waves and a very supportive group willing to help out the newbie including kite nite on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Is kite night every wednesday or thursday or only on those where the wind is strong enough?
the nephew needs to start learning........haha

Call All Surf Industry and/or Gorge Performance... they do the kite nights. Obviously they only go out if its windy, give them a call before you head out there to find out if they are going out or not. Sometimes ASI will go to the Airport instead if the wind is better there.
