Good kitesurfing in Soma Bay, Egypt?

Postby Philipp » Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:14 am

Have been thinking about the Sheraton Soma Bay Resort in Egypt. Does anybody know if this is a good place to go kitesurfing. I assume the winds are the same as in Hurghada, but what about the rest (wind direction, reefs, etc)?

Thanks for any help

I heard it is very nice.
A friend of mine has been there and said it is nice.
And the hotel is excellent!
There is a nice sandbar in front of it, which makes it like a kind of lagoon.
Don't know if sideshore etc.

When will you go?

I mean the better spots in the same big bay are:

Hotel InterConti Abu Soma (*****, expensive)
with Wind- and Kite-Surf-Center: Peter Müller (see picture)

or

Hotel Shams Safaga (***, cheap)
with Wind- and Kite-Surf-Center: Club Mistral

both with sideshore wind from left, choppy water, no waves.

Detlef, did you kite directly at the Sheraton or Robinson Club??
How are the wind directions there?

Some years ago I went upwind with a windsurf board from the Hotel Shams Safaga to the Sheraton and Robinson Club.
The wind there comes in the morning sideoffshore from the right and in the afternoon offshore (see map, description in german):

This year we went by taxi and boat from Hotel Shams Safaga to the northern part of Soma Bay and went downwind to InterConti Abu Soma and Shams Safaga. It is also not difficult (if you can go upwind with your kite) to ride from every hotel to the small Tobia Island (sand bar with lovely reefs for snorkeling).

I will definitely go there in October. Anybody a better idea at this time of the year?

Cheers,

Stefan

It starts to get less consistant from end of September.
I have been two times now end of October and had no good luck with the wind. comes and goes, you can be lucky, but also have bad luck.

I have been to the SOMA BAY Sheraton twice, in Dicember and in January.
The Hotel and the location is very nice, but the wind is vey tricky, since is shielded by the buildings, the hotel itself and the Robinson village.
The result is a number of wind channels where there is nothing and immediately after strong streams that are difficult to handle. It may be dangerous (I am kiting since 4 years).
You need to go into the open sea to get better conditions, but then you are too far from the beach.
As a conclusion, I recommend the Hotel more for holiday makers than to pure kiters.
Snorkling is super on Sheraton back pier, that leads you directly to the deep reef.
