you will be surprised about the results of the Quick Releases.
I didn't read the full article yet, but got an info from Shiro (Cabrinha Germany) with overall marks.
The test has been done by Michael Starken, who is the of the German Kitesurf Trophy, which is the tour with the highest safety standards worldwide. Michael is testing under load every bar and its quick releases prior to the event and marks the tested bars so no one can use another bar after the test. If they are over the limit, that bar will be forbidden for the competition!
Advance: the relatively big velcro becomes a break when you want to release it
Challenger: very bad
North Sceptor: very bad
Ocean Rodeo: bad
Peter Lynn: very bad
Slingshot: very bad
X-Shooter: very good
Cabrinha: some discussions about it, so here the full text and a statement:
the more pressure on the QR, the easier it releases. With 150kg pressure it releases with only 2kg, which is a record. But it can also lead to failures and it will open by itself. Result for the safety leash: very bad.
The complete reviews will be in the latest issue of the KITE magazine 04/2004.

inadequate - 3
bad - 5
very bad - 4
The one from advance I don't know where to put it
This is concerning, all of us want's cheaper's kite but who will pay the R&D for safety, from this test we can see that we are completly in stone age regardling to safety that come with the bars.
This results should be completly the inverse it's absurd to have 12 under the acceptable on a test regarding 16
The very good it's a bit suspicious but I will give you a the value of doubt
I think this is a good basis of work to start with
The X-shooter is German....the only bar getting a "very good" rating and done by a German. Is he in anyway connected with the X-Shooter company? I have hung from the ceiling in my SS chicken loop with weight attached to me and pulled the QR...it releases everytime easily no matter what the load...what is he talking about? Whats "very bad " about that?
In the medical world there are also so called blind tests from independent sources
I know cause I've done those too !
Now the strange thing is that depending on the way the tests were conducted the outcome changed alot. You can have tests made by universities about the same product all over the world and some will say it's an excellent product and some not ...
The problem with testing something is that the test has to as close as possible to the reality. Kitesurfing has so many variables that it is almost impossible to test it correctly in a lab-environnement.
On another note I question Toby's independancy. Again in the medical world when you wanna sell a product, all you have to do is mention all the tests that have been done by independant sources that had a good outcome about the product you wanna sell, and FORGET THE OTHER TESTS.
Nice forum and if you wanna make money out of it, no problem with me I'll keep reading it but don't buy everything I read.
after looking at the xshooter materpeice bar, http://gallery.kiteforum.com/gallery/albur53 for ~250 euros it seems like a rip off. To me their pics look like crap. It would be nice to have some specifics for the test. and reasons for the bad grade. What we need is some company like consumer reports to evaluate a set of bars & safety equipment.
there are too many morons in this world. Read what he has said. The test was done by a magazine, and it is not a french magazine or a US magazine that would always put a national company first, it is a german magazine.
Toby, was the x-shooter bar tested a masterpiece bar, or the one from last year ??
I think we all need to wait a little for the test to appear completely, so we know what was tested.
P.S. pics looking crap, who cares, the bar looks great.
