I use a Mainline 159 with Switch step-ins. I would recomend the Flow bindings though. They are much easier to get into. Dress in layers too. I always overheat when snowkiteing. Also make sure your boots are super comfy.

Garmin has a good idea for GPS/radio combo, but unfortinatly it isn't VHF.
But if you and your buddy has a pair of this toys you can see location of each other
The 5xx models 100% water proof, 5w, and have good battery. They even have a nice feature to query for other device position.
All rino models compartible with each other, and older models can be had for 100 bucks ...

Make sure You don´t rely on an IPX7 device!
The Garmin above will have to be put into a watertight bag.
IPX7 allows for immersion to 1 m depth for 30 minutes. Thus the device could fail while You hit the water and this might happen at any time.
I´d rather rely on chemical lights or the strobe recommended by RickI above.

IPX7 in this new rino isn't that bad. To be 99% safe you probably want a plastic bag though. The old devices had problem with battery compartment(it wasn't IPX7 proofed), but the 5xx models use special lithium battery. I took mine for a few KB sessions without plastic bag and so far it holds well...
