I know, this info is from parasailing. My point bringing this here is that they used this deteriorated harness to fly a passenger 450 feet off the water, at which time the harness let go and she fell to her death.

The webbing that broke looks to be 2 inches wide, and both sides gave out. Lots of sun and salt over the years weakened it.

We all hang by 2 inch webbing, sometimes even the 1 inch stuff. Not 450 feet above the water, but a fall from 20 would hurt like hell. Lesson for us: be wary of old gear, pitch it if it looks weak, especially if your life depends on it.

the most stress on your harness is pre take off when you are loading up for a jump so this is the most likely time that it will fail, not when you are actually airborne

I've had 3 pieces of gear break while jumping: spreader bar at the apex (just one side) and on landing, and a CL snap on the redirect. Lucky so far!
