5th line and trim strap, does it affect the line lenght?

Postby Youtch » Wed May 31, 2006 12:01 pm

One short question I had always in mind, and did not manage to find a real answer:

If you have a 5th line bar system:

When you completely depower your kite with the trim strap, the front lines become 20cm shorter.
-> Does it mean that the 5th line will be then 20cm loose?

Or is there any system in the market to prevent this?

Many thanks,
Yannick

Yes.

Most Systems (Naish and North for sure) have a stopper at the end of the Y-Line.
That way the length of the 5th line between the Kite and the Y-Connections is fixed, no matter what you do below the Y.

Ok so in this case, the part that would get 20cm loose is just the leash connected to the 5th line. Correct?

Thanks again. :bye:

The line from the split in the Y down to you would get 20 cm more loose. You could take the excess out by pulling the leash if it is connected to the 5th line, else it would be dangling around somewhere.

Right, Naish has a bungee on the 5th line, so that covers some of it.

North has had a bungee and is now without bungee, it really doesn't matter too much, if at all.

Some systems (such as mine) do exactly as you described... you pull the trim strap and the 5th line becomes more slack. I don't trim with my 5th line so it doesn't matter for me... it's only a safety.

Jan,

I like the idea of having the 5th line move with the front lines so the
3 lines maintain the 'same' tension regardless of the trim strap setting.

I want to set up my own 5th line. I will probably come close to the
exact length, but I'm sure I will have to do some fine-tuning once I'm on the
water. How do I accomplish this with a fixed stopper ball? I could use a
clamcleat, but then I have to move it close to the handle soi I can reach
it, in which case, it will no longer be fixed to the 'Y". Any suggestions?

There is also another stopper ball alog the 5th line sloser to the kite. This
one prevents the bar from sliding up too far and keep sthe kite
from hovering in the air. How do you make a stopper ball that's
adjustable?

I made an adustable fith which came from the kite down through a small plastic cleat (which was fixed to back of depower strap) and then fixed to the side of my spinning shackle release (whichard welded to a good swivel) on harness.

You could then adjust fith by pulling on the line between cleat and harness or pulling line out of cleet teeth and releasing some slack. I was going to add a small length of bungy to end of fith to remove slack but never got round to it.

I also used this as my safety leash... when you release chicken loop the bar slides up the fith as the cleat teeth in this direction slide over the fith line.

Its also great for relaunch just pull a few feet get kite on its back then pull one steering line up she goes very depowered. Then release fith from cleat teeth and feed line back out to power kite as required.

Used this for 18 months never had a problem.

This was not my idea if you search adjustable 5th u should find it on hear somewhere!. These were pictures from thread. I cant seem to find it now ?

I think people are now using dynamic 5th which adjusts as you sheet bar in and out. Check current posts.
