Is there a way to turn these off?

The best way to achieve this is to use a decent browser like firefox and get a marvelous little extension called adblock. That way you right click on a avatar and you will have the option to block that image (the offensive or annoying one) or wildcard the block for example to http://www.kiteforum.com/phpbb/images/avatars/* and presto, no more avatars.

It also makes browsing this forum much easier in lots of other ways, which I won't mention as my last post on this subject was deleted

Hit escape, this stop all images from animating.

Get firefox and install some extensions. There are some good ones that disable flash (adverts) and pictures from a different domain (avitars, adverts, etc)

And firefox is actually good:PC World reciently voted IE6 the 6th worst bit of software *ever* released.

Conversely, is there a way to animate boring, PC avatars for people who obviously have too much time to bother others about such things?

Yea, well, I have been asked by others in my environment to stop browsing this site because of it.

I am not going into why but one of the avatars in particular is disturbing to someone because of their personal experience. I also find it annoying.

Rather than ask for censorship, I am asking for a way to turn these pictures off. Plug-ins are great, but they only last so long as the site does not change the way an item is displayed.

I already asked people to remove annoying ones and deleted some which are too annoying.

Send me a PM of which ones you have in mind.

The question is, if avatars should not be animated at all?

definately go firefox. You can block all the ads and stuff as well which is handy if you just want to come here to read the forum info and ditch all the advertising and idiotic avitars. I like fo but that cat is creepy........

i like 'em all. keep the avatars unmoderated! (i understand toby will have to check any that conflict with his ad revenue and anything really offensive...but let's not start editing these for T&A. Its the internet, you go on it and know you're going to see a boob flash here and there....)

we could just have a blanket checkbox to turn off avatars or maybe to just turn off "adult" avatars if you must. but don't stop allowing them for the .01% that squeeks about it...
