Not sure how much sitting on the computer checking the wind report every 5 minutes nervously is good for your health. But once the wind is there, Nirvana.

Yes But:
Before i took up kitesurfing i was recreationally cycling for 15 years. Riding 5-6 times a week, 3-4000 km per year. Also running and swimming a bit in late season so i coudl do recreational triathlons.
Now after kiting 3 years, ive gone up 5kgs and i cant ride more thatn 30km at one time.
I can kite for several hours, my arms and shoulders are stronger, but i am not in good cardiovascular shape.

I have to agree with Tom.
Anything that you can do for five hours w/o even breathing hard can't be the greatest cardio workout.
You can't argue with results, however. My buddy lost over 20lbs from kiting and he looks and feels great.
Hey, you can lose weight walking if you walk often enough.
I don't think that kiting burns anywhere near the same calories as other things like bicycling or swimming or running, but then again those things aren't nearly as fun and I never have to motivate myself to go kiting.

for kite cardio, sometimes I'll do maybe five low level tricks on one reach, and after I'm breathing pretty hard, but atherwise no a lot of cardio just cruisin.

Carve hard, turn fast and often, ride toeside, jump, do fast "carve hard" downwinders folowed by steep "kite working" upwinders and you will burn a lot. Hoever MOST IMPORTANT of all the duration of execise is very important. Only after about an hour do the real helth benefits kick in. Burning calories is no real benefit unless you go into sourcing fat for energy. Once you get into this mode you can go on for as long as your muscle fitness can take you. For this reason it is also important for an intensive athlete to not eat an exageratedly low fat diet. Yes keep the animal fats out of your diet, but eat those avocados, coconut fats, beans, nuts and healthy olive oils etc. These fats are great sources of long term and above all emegency energy supply.
Cheers
Fred

I hear you Fred, I kite pretty hard though. I'm not saying I don't burn calories. But if I go out on my mountain bike for one hour, I'd bet I burn more calories than a 3 hr kiting sesh.
But you got it right, the key is a healthy diet in conjunction with cardiovascular excersise.
Now, if I move to Costa Rica, kite every day for 6hrs and eat mangos and avacados every day. That sounds like a weight loss program I could live with.

great thread!
the actual kiting workout for me is arms + abs. but for me it's also incentive to keep the weight down. i've weighed between 160 & 190 and have to say that my natural state is fat and slothy. but light wind days make keeping the fat off worth while. i'll trade that extra beer & pizza for a big jump any day

So Fred, does this mean that if all kiters become vegans we'll have more wind?

Yea, you cannot eat pizza or drink beer when your kiting. Just the time away from food helps you lose weight. I really feel a work out, when in the ocean with gusty conditions and lot of heavy chop. this really seems to work the entire body.

Fred, which type of yoga do you take? I'm 42 years old and as you probably knows the body turn stiff with age. I'm thinking of taking yoga or tai chi but does not know which type since there are differents. I would like one that makes my body flexible because I plan to kite until last day.
