Live longer kite.

Postby Sea&Sun » Sat Jun 03, 2006 11:34 am

Well, I am now down to 180lbs and my heart rate is like a marathon runner. Four years ago when I started kiting I was 220 lbs. I smoked 2 packs of cigs a day. My heart rate was poor. I found out quick if I wanted to kite I needed to stop smoking and get the fat off. I haven’t smoked in four years now. Kiting is really a great and fun way to get in shape. I wonder how many people will live longer from kiting. Also the mental health benefits from the sport are great. You never think about problems when you are kiting. It really frees the mind. So when you see that old fat guy with the helmet give him a break.

Yeah, kiting can be such an addiction it can make you take better care of yourself the rest of the time (so that you're in prime condition the next time the wind blows). I have been swimming on the off days and the combination (swimming + kiting) has really helped get me in better shape - also having a landboard handy is great for getting a session when time/conditions aren't quite enough for water.

On the other hand, I use to get a warm, fuzzy feeling when I watched a gentle breeze make the leaves flutter over the top of my head. Now, deep in the pit of my stomach, a slight growling occurs, perhaps followed by a bowel movement, and then perhaps another. My heart rate starts to go up. Another trip to the shitter if the wind seems to be increasing and another rise in my heart rate. Pretty soon any task becomes an annoyance unless it's getting in my car and doing YOU KNOW WHAT.

Sometimes I wonder.

that sounds good! I'm happy for you.

I can't understand how people can go out and enjoy the nice, fresh air..and then go back to the beach and smoke, filling their lungs with dead air...

The sport is for sur a beauty, I'm just happy being able to do it!

I know what you mean. I wish I could control myself better in this regard.

If I can't kite these seem to help take the edge off a bit: mountain biking, kayaking, weight lifting workout.

The worst thing for me if I can't go is watching kitesurfing videos. Watching them makes it worse. I guess that is like watching a porn movie and then not having sex.

Yup

Kitesurfing has been great for my health too. It's complete body exercise and it is such fun that you push yourself to do it longer than you would less fun stuff like swinning or the gym.
The exitement gives you a good fast heartbeat (i'd guess 130) for all the time you are out there.
I started when I was 44. I still weigh what I weighed when I started 220 lbs @ 6'5" but what happened is the weight moved from around my waist to my shoulders. I'm also a Vegan. Both the diet and kitesurfing have brought my blood tests all back into the excellent range. My doctor told me that the values are those of a healthy 25 year old.
I was also having some back problems (especially lower back) from a car accident and working for many hours infront of the computer. Kiting fixed that with the help of a bit of yoga.
At this rate I think I will still be kiting when I'm 80 :o :D

If you are into sports a Vegan diet is great. Keeps your body clean and you can eat a ton of food. Some great India, Thai and Italian grub out there. One of the coolest things is that with the cooking I do...tasty stuff that even non VEgans love... is so clean that you don't need detergent to clean the pots pans and dishes. When you need to use detergent to clean your stuff, just think of what it must be doing to your guts.

Oh also a Vegan diet will give you GAS and apart from being FUN  you will have your own central air in your wetsuit and that extra propultion for the low end. :thumb:

Cheers

Fred

Congratulations on quiting smoking :thumb:
Not easy to give up 2 packs a day!

As a kid I had tuberculosis and my first memmories are from the pulmonary intensive care ward in hospital. I saw smokers with lung desease so out of breath taht they could not make it to the bathroom in one trip even though it was 25 yards away.

As a tot I had to fight for my breath day in and day out, just like many smokers will have to do. I can tell you that it is the most terrifying thing you can imagine....think of it ...drowning dry!!!!

I have the utmost respect for everyone that gives up smoking!!

Good job my friend :thumb:

Cheers

Fred
