what would happen if...?

Postby kikie » Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:03 pm

I'm thinking that a kite made of dacron (all of it, including the canopy) will be tough as hell and also very stiff, it will be heavier but almost indestructible... so I imagine it will loose some low-end range but will last in perfect condition much longer....
what do you guys think?
how heavy is the lightest dacron?
how heavier would be a 12 meter using the lightest dacron instead of spinnker?

Do you destroy your kites that quickly? Even 100% dacron is still gonna be destroyed if a wave smacks into it so I'm not sure what you're trying to gain. Kites are still evolving at the point that every 3-4 years you'll probably want to upgrade your most frequently used sizes anyway, so having a kite that will last 10 years doesn't really benefit anybody.

The kite would be way too heavy and would fly like shit if it flew at all.

What about monofilm? It's the clear stuff they use in windsurfing sails. It doesn't stretch at all and it is very light and pretty tough. It also does not absorb water.

mono weighs at least 5 times as much as dacron, unless it were much thinner

:-?
I think it would fly like shit in the low-end of its range but if there's enough wind it will be stiffer and faster... ¿or not?

and about changing my kite each 3 or 4 years that would be great, but what happens actually is that if you ride the same kite on a regular basis (twice or three times a week) in one or two years time, that kite's canopy will be overstreched and that kite will then fly like shit ... if you are lucky and it hasn't got any tears or rips...

but maybe you are right and it would be too heavy and it would get extremely heavy when it drops on the water and relaunching could be extremely difficult

Dr, Frankenstein belives we are very close to a nonwoven fabric (nano-fiber) that can be 3d laser welded that is non-air permeable (eliminating the need for bladders) and extremely lightweight making it the ultimate sailcloth, kite material. Couple this with an interior exoskeleton such as that used with inflatable surfboards and emergency stretchers and you will have the ultimate wing shape on a kite.
