Space Bags for kites (packing for trips)

Postby CaptainArgh » Mon Feb 05, 2007 4:38 pm

Does anyone use vacuum seal Space Bags for packing kites? Do you have a method for resealing the bags for your trip home with your kite pump?

I'm thinking of making a run to the hardware store to rig some kind of converter to go from a wide pump nozzle (~.5") to a vacuum cleaner size nozzle (~1.5"). However, the only person I asked who tried it said the kite pumps, on deflate, don't have enough suction to get the air out of the bags.

If the kite pumps don't work, I suppose its hoping to borrow a hotel vacuum cleaner with a hose, but I'd hate to rely on that as my only option for getting all the gear home.

Any tips appreciated. Thanks! :bye:

I've seen those bags with one way valves on them, you just push all the air out no vacuum needed

I had no problem with the pump/vac bag. I rigged up the cap to adapt to the pump hose and viola. Perfectly flat. This is two 15 meter kites (was testing out the bags capacity.)

PM me if you would like the instructions for the adaptor.

toddjb,

The kite pump works great on deflate. Sucks way more than a vacumm cleaner so your kite will pack up tiny. I've done it lots. just get a piece of vacuum tube (1-1 .5" or so diamater) and cut it off so it is only a few inches long then use lots of black electrical tape to join it to the pump fitting. not pretty, but easy and you may not even need to go the hardware store

There is also another option for vacuum bags...The ones I use have a ziplock on one end...and the ohter is a one way seam/valve that you just squeeze the air out by kneeling on it. I use the same size bag for each of my kites 9M, 12M & 16M. When weight has been an issue, I can easily fit my 16M in a small backpack as carryone luggage.
I picked those bags up a Kitesurfari in SoCal.
They definitely shocked alot kiters in Brasil...When I pulled out 2 kites from a small backpack!
They work Great. :thumb:

I've used both styles of compersion bags. The one's that you can use a vacuum with are better for bulky things like kites, I've used them to pack down spinnakers for sail boats and they make the kites super small. best bet is to look on a travel web site they'll have them.
