What kites are the heavy guys using, 200 - 240 Lbs Riders,

Postby Wilkite » Tue Feb 19, 2008 1:47 am

I am interested to find out what kites heavier riders are using, my wieght is 220LBs and been kiting for 8 years and looking to get a new big kite.

I use a Naish X4 20m as my main kite with wind range from 13 - 22 Knots but it is at the end of its life and i need something new (or near new) to replace.

Not sure if i should look at another C kite or a big bow kite.

Needs to get me going in 13 knots with a normal 130 - 140 board, not interested in using a bigger board or surf board.

All opinions welcomed.

Rhinos.

Ken takes pride in making the Rhino the most powerful kite per size possible. The tradition continues with the 08 being the most powerful yet. Beware, and don't buy one too big for your needs.

A 12m is all you need.

A 10 for me at 200 lbs.

Thanks for the reply Dwight, i have a 16m + 12m C kites and after 3 years or so they look like new as i use my 20m 95% of the time.

I like riding well powered with plenty of bar pressure and riding on the stopper.

Is the 12m you are referring to a C or SLE kite ?

I weight 100kg and only own an Ozone Instinct 2006 13m, use it with a 152FLX or a 132FLX depending on the wind. Am planning to upgrade to a 15m Sport and 11m Edge soonish.

I'm 105-110kg (roughly 240lb) and i ride a 13m F-one Bandit. I have 2 boards, 07 nobile 666 132x41 and 07 Nobile 666ext 142x48. I can get riding in around 14kt with my big board, but dont do much until at least 18-20kt of windy goodness.

Thanks Tvillegus, would you buy a bigger SLE or C kite to get you jumping in 12 - 13 knots.

I am not sure which option to go for either a 20m North Rhino 6 (or other 20m C's which are still around) or a 16/17 2008 Bow kite.

Most of the smaller riders all say get a smaller kite and we have no bigger riders in our area to compare with.

Thanks for your info.

HI Kytsrf
Thanks for the reply, do you know the bottom end of your friends combo with a normal 130/140 - 40 board ?

That would be really interesting.

I am in the same boat as you. 235lbs and I hate slow kites.

I have owned a
contra C 23.5. then a contra bow 17 - both of these had good low end but were sooooo slow they weren't much fun to fly.

Last year I got a Hypertype 15 which replaced the Contra 17. I didn't loose much if any low end and because the kite is faster I was having more fun. The Hyper was so much more fun than the slow kites I had been flying.

This year I am on a Royal Era 14 as my biggest kite. The low end on the Eras is even better than the hypertype and the Era is faster. so more fun than the Hypertype.

At our size you are never going to win a low wind battle with a 130 pounder, but I can go and have fun in any decent wind (starting around 12 knots or so).

Have fun,
JJ

PS don't overlook the importance of a good lightwind board either

I am 210 lbs. I now ride RRD HT2 15 m as my biggest kite. Also have a Royal Era 14 m which also have good low end. The HT2 15m is fun to ride - pretty fast for that size.
My light wind board is a Skywalker 135x48 cm.

I think a good low wind board is possible more important than the last couple of m2 kite. I would probably choose a light wind board a little longer if I was to choose a new one - to be able to point higher. Look into the Spleene board I think!
