I recently was charged $95 for a one way Continental flight for my Dakine 150 cm Air Wagon bag. And United is going to start charging $100 for golf bags.
What other options are available to avoid charges?
Here's some ideas I've had so far that might work::
1. Put the board in a small board only bag, kites and other gear in regular checked suitcases.
2. Ship the board via Federal Express or other overnight shipping companies - they may be able to hold it at their receiving office for pickup when I arrive.
3. Leave the board at home and rent a board at the destination.
4. Buy, make, or convert and existing board to a folding board that will fit in a regular suitcase.

I ran some quotes and those luggage service companies charge more than the airlines.
That is a really nice looking folding surfboard. I didn't see a price on it but most of the folding kiteboards are very expensive - $1,000 and up.

you have to travel 10 times to make it worth while...never the less a great idea.
PS: travel once, buy a board and don't go home....works

continental does have a kiteboard allowance. but the dimensions are pretty rediculous. you basically have to put it in like a day board bag with little padding to get the dimensions small enough to make it work. check out their website to figure it out the allowed dimensions. what i did was put my kites in one checked bag with my clothes and used a liquid force day bag to hold my board.

Coolstr85 - I don't know if even a thin day bag would work since the airlines seem to be all using a linear limit of 62 inches/157 or 158 cm (length + width + height) and 50 pounds.
The 62 in / 158 cm sounds good at first and it is adequate for the board length but then the width and height measurements violate the limit when added into the linear measurement total.
Maybe if the bag is close to the limit the ticket agent might let it pass the linear limit. Which under United Airlines' new rules it would only be charged $25 instead of $100 as the second checked bag (assuming non-premium passenger status).
The cheapest folding board price I've found is $1,300.

Continental is awful. They charged me $150 (one way) to take a Mystic Gearbox containing 3 kites and one board.I also had a 170 cm Mako Surf in a separate bag. Sure, quite a bit of stuff but I had no other luggage to check and no carry- on either. By comparison, two weeks prior I flew with Alaska Airlines with way more stuff than this and did not pay a dime, and with Aeromexico and they only charged me $60. Continental also has a maximum allowance of 70 lbs/bag and won't take anything over this for any fee.
In my experience it really does not matter how you pack your stuff - it all depends on who checks you in at the counter, how busy the flight is etc etc...
Cheers,
Evan
