We were all kiting on the ocean in East long island near montauk and this crazy storm hit in. Everyone was riding in about 13 knots side shore, and then a heat clove started to build up and the clouds got all dark and i felt a lot of heat build up. A huge gust at about 40 knots offshore hit in, some people said it was 60 knots, and it started hailing hard, we all got out of the water before the storm. You were lucky you didnt go though.

We did a downwinder in the Great South Bay and a similar thing happened. The wind really picked up toward the end and it was great - some of the biggest jumps ever - but that wind was feeding a dark area over the bay. We watched it growing, and we came in when the wind started to die and before it got ugly.

As we were packing our gear the thunder and lightning started. There were still kites out in the middle of the bay! It was scary to watch, but it looked like they got picked up by their supervisors/jetskis. I hope they made it in OK.

About my name... my views have changed over the years, i used to always ride c kites and i loved the torches then the ozones came and they work good ffor unhooking and jumping with a nice windrange too

I hope thy made it in too. It was scary on the ocean because it started going offshore. Good thing most of us saw it coming.

I sure the wind in randykato's graph was much less than the actual wind because my friend took out his wind meter or weather tracker and it was much more than what the graph said, for our area.

yeah, it was definitely more. i was on my 12 with it half depowered on the strap and i was still super lit... i would say that stretch from 4 - 4:45pm was averaging about 20 with gusts to 25.

at around 6 we had a huge gust offshore and iit was well over the average speed, then lightning came. Im sure the gust was 40 knots or more.

I found out it was a shelf cloud.. watch out for them they cause strong gusts lightning and possibly tornadoes.
