Show pictures of dead or almost dead kiters?

Postby Toby » Mon Aug 18, 2008 6:19 pm

To respect the dead kiter, we should continue the discussion on here.

In a topic about the death of a fellow kiter pictures have been shown, which show the face in a close up while rescue tries to bring him back to life.

I asked the viewers of the thread if they would advise to take those pictures down, since I didn't know how to handle it. All users advised to take it down.

Now tungsten222 wants them to be back online, as he said it was posted by a friend of his, so the pictures should stay online. As far as I know there was no ok from the family.

So here comes the question, if such pictures should be shown on this forum or not. Of course, if any family member does not want them to be shown, they will be taken offline no matter what.

Hi Toby,
i don´t know what to think regarding this.....

For once i think this is the ultimate price to pay for practising our sport and should never be forgotten, this way perhaps people who think this is easy and let´s try it with some kite bought on ebay without any teaching would stop to think about doing so.

On the other hand the respect for our lost friend should be guaranteed, i saw the pictures on the brazilian site and they are dreadfull.

This is a very tough one.

Rgds and ride safe, good winds

Luis

I think those pics are just of public domain since they are posted on a on-line newspaper.
It is obvious those pics damage in some way the ''kite marketing''. Something like the pics on some cigarettes pakets.
But those are pics to be seen IMO, how many time we hear about kite accident and just ignore them, those pics are different, nobody after see them can't just ignore them. I'm still thinking of them since yesterday.

Why not?

too bad we can't get a group shot...

stacked up like cord wood...

Little toe tags describing their skill level...and age

semi pro 35, advanced 23, instructor 41, advanced 17, instructor 28, touring pro 24...

intermediate 52, newb 8.(that's the latest request l right?) .all 65 or 70 odd sum of them...

we need to throw up, as well as throw down...

It's about a balanced outlook.,pry your eyes open if need be....

why not what's wrong with being real?

Face it, look at the faces....

and throw up first, then complain about your need to throw down...

In the USA tradition is to show a nice portrait of the deceased for remembrance. Its very tasteless to post a bloodied up photo of a dead person IMO.

easy to say "show them, post them gory pictures" put yourself in the dead man's shoes, doubt you would like for that to be the last shot you are remembered by. Just because his friend took the photo's doesn't mean he was thinking clearly at the time. I wouldn't want my family to see that.

Wait a second...

I live in the USA and it's a tradition to show MEGA BLOOD AND GORE in traffic schools...

We're here to learn from the dead guys RIGHT????

RIGHT?

look, i don't care either way, I have my views and I'm comfy with them...

But I think you guys ought to get your story straight...

School based ethic or PC funeral home ethic?

pick one

Its a difficult decision for you Toby and I guess you want to know what the general opinion is.

In the recent case, a friend of the deceased posted them, which makes it very difficult for you to remove them. He was doing what he thought was best and I respect his decision.

I think most people want to remember people they love in a positive way and that their lives were more important than their death. For that reason, I think the family of the deceased may have misgivings about the photos being published. I think that would transcend any benefit that may result for kite safety.

Recently a picture of a girl whose mouth was smashed by her board hitting her was published and it will be something I remember each time in future if I have to decide if the circumstances justify using a board leash.
The recent pictures would have some impact with regard to safety, but being safe is more a thought process than an emotional one. That's why I think we benefit more from the analysis of all the circumstances leading to the accident than needing to see photos.

If I had been in your position, I would have contacted his friend who posted and explained my point of view, making it clear I did not think he personally had done anything wrong. He might have reflected on things and removed them, but if he didn't I would have explained my view on things and removed them.
Maybe seen as dictatorial by some, but you have to make those decisions and do what you think is best.

has the family been asked if it is ok to put up the pictures?

I doubt.

But I do think it is also good to show shocking pictures, like the girl who got her teeth knocked out.

But seeing those pictures I'm not sure if this is ok to show them...therefore I ask.
