From flat-water freedom to tearing the bag out of any size surf, the 2010 Rebel is the all-terrain free-ride/wave kite of your dreams. Smooth, lively and responsive steering, even when de-powered, makes it the ideal kite for surfing and a blast to ride in any conditions.
The loaded 5th line design, in addition to providing safety, gives the Rebel its short and
aggressive power stroke that is up to 30% shorter than bridled kites. This means huge range and
top-end comfort on those super windy days and the ability to instantly turn the power off and on at will as you link your turns down the line. Our new “floating” center strut further enhances the direct de-power by allowing the canopy to easily luff as well as providing rock-solid stability in strong winds.

The new back-line “V” attachment distributes the load of the back-lines on the kite for a solid bar feel and, together with the new bungee system, eliminates any line snags during re-launch. The Rebel’s unique steering sensitivity and smoothness have also been improved by implementing a straight segment in the leading edge for an ultra clean, flutter-free canopy near the tips that keeps you connected and in-tune to the kite’s every movement.

So stop dreaming and go ride!

Hottest Arguments:

- Freeride / Wave benchmark
- loaded 5th line concept
- short and direct depower stroke
- floating center strut
- V-backline system with integrated relaunch bungees
- direct and fast following steering commands, even when completely depowered
- low drag design
- constant test winner

Rebel 2010 – first test

Kiteboarding Magazine, August 2009
A kite test of the most wanted kites is like a gourmet menu with lots of ingredients:
A well known model with huge popularity, a newcomer with innovations and alow budget model challenging the old bull.
The KITEBOARDING test kitchen created this menu with four main courses. The Rebel 2010 offers not just the 5th line, which ensures the main role regarding safety discussions, but also built up a mass appeal like any other kite can show. The old dog is on the way to the next step regarding popularity and is not afraid at all of any new release.
The North Rebel is a recipe for success, like there is nearly no second one. Five years ago the Rhino still was the kite for the masses and a huge fan community, but the Rebel lapped the Rhino long ago. 2009 it was probably the most sold kite. Versatility, high performance, lots of capabilities and especially the typical characteristic of comfort, are the reasons for the success of the Rebel through the last years. Because of that, the people who like the Rebel could not be more different from each other: from beginner to professional, from Freerider to Wavejunkie all swear by this kite. But popularity and terrific success also create pressure. The pressure always to be better than the good kite of the last season. And exactly this was the aim of the North Designers. Again create a kite with lots of comfort and performance, suiting for most of the riders on the globe. The central development concentrated to make the smaller kites softer and more forgiving, the bigger numbers with a crispier feel on the bar. Additionally the depower should again increase. To achieve theses goals, North created a floating middle strut. The principle of 4 struts is still working – while the not connected middle strut offers an increased stability for the whole profile.

Windrange:

With just some little sinus acceleration, the Rebel starts very early. The depower is working very effective and absolutely linear, this makes the usable windrange enormous.

Jumping:

The jumping potential is for a freeride kite very huge. The performance comes with progressive power which underlines the sportive attributes of the Rebel. Because of it’s position in the wind window, the Rebel is not the perfect kite for Newschool tricks, but therefore the Vegas is offered.

Bar feeling:

The bar feeling of the last Rebel reached an optimum of directness and precision.
This didn’t change with the 2010 model. Only the point of pressure changed a little bit and needs a short moment to get used to it.

Comfort:

The Rebel 2010 can be used very easy and still offers exceptional high comfort based on low forces at the bar and high precision. Especially this point was appreciated by lots of customers of the 2009 model. Just the performance is now delivered a little bit more progressive than at it’s predecessor.

Turning:

Little steering efforts make smallest radiuses possible. Some over steering can be possible while getting used to the easy steering and the small power required for steering.
Bigger radiuses can be flown exact and clean.

Range of use

Freeride:

The new Rebel is again an awesome freeride kite. Clean flying characteristics with lowest bar forces and great precision are combined with nice upwind abilities and great jumping performance. The whole picture is a little bit sportier than last year’s model.

Freestyle:

It`s outstanding performance shows the kite at jumps with using the power of the kite, reaching the highest atmospheres. If the wind goes up, also the hangtime is getting longer. Due to the low drag, it’s easy to find the exact timing for jumps. Who is into unhooked tricks, will be satisfied by the Rebel, because of it’s concept, you can’t expect peak.

Wave:

One of the strengths of the Rebel is still the use in waves. He shows the fastest and narrowest turnings with minimum bar forces, a robust position in the wind window and a total linear and effective Depower.

Conclusion:

Rebel 2010 is the magic word for the freerider.
Who additionally loves high jumps and likes kiting in the waves, gets lots of performance additionally. Versatility is by far the main goal of this since years so successful kite.
To the very well balanced character of the Rebel, North just added some spicy, sporty ingredients which doesn’t effect the easiness of use at all. Kiters of lower levels still can rely on the Rebel. The comfort really increased at the water relaunch. The Rebel goes up from the water even easier than last year. Regarding safety, the 5th line is still a bench-mark in safety. But the most noticeable change was made in quality: doubled and tripled sews everywhere, huge effort in connecting the struts to the fronttube and everything made very clean. The Rebel again doesn’t have to be concerned about it’s popularity in 2010.

WOW !!
So it has more depower, lowend, boosting higher, is safer, and is better in all terrain then the 2009 Rebel??
I have got to get me one.

I'm sure this kite is finally pushing the enveloppe in kiteboarding, and not some marketing hype.
Can North please put me on the list??

I think what they're trying to say is they bothered to test this years version and can confirm that it doesn't fold up on itself.... but you never know

Hmmm, back to five struts with some very straight looking segments. Especially between the two outside struts. Looks more and more like a that GeoTech stuff from Naish?

Our new “floating” center strut further enhances the direct de-power by allowing the canopy to easily luff as well as providing rock-solid stability in strong winds.
Can someone explain this statement? I thought we didn't want our kites luffing. How is luffing a good thing?

Anyone have any good pics of this floating strut?

This video illustrates the luffing advantages of the straight strut, but Bruno attached the strut to the canopy with a wing profile web of cloth.

the new bar and leash hookup looks siiiiick.

you can use the traditional 5th line atatchment for your leash to completely flag OR hook to the new ring that acts like a suicide (with a bit of 5th line depower) but will still allow you to release to complete flagging.

Contrary to the what the literature says the Rebel is good for wakestyle. I ride the thing unhooked alot and this new leash is a dream come true.

Basically unchanged but consistently refined since '05 the North bar is far and away the #1 bar, i.m.h.o.

anybody got more pictures of the new bar and Ironheart?
