Any beach cart ideas for tons of equipment?

Postby perroloco » Fri Feb 19, 2010 3:23 am

My back is taking brutal punishment by carrying all of my kiteboarding stuff from the car to the beach. I also carry beach chairs, umbrela and stuff to tame my girlfriend while I do my time at sea. I own a regular sized sedan and it is basicaly stuffed with my gear. Any ideas for a compact cart that will fit in my car and roll freely on sand?

Fold up golf cart. The pull cart variety. There are several guys around here that have modified them to carry all their gear and boards for a spot that has a bit of a walk. The fold up one won't take up too much room. They also have nice big wheels which works on sand.

I actually tried this, but I found there are serious weight restrictions. I tested it with 2 low seat aluminum lawn chairs, a bag with towels and a jug of .... juice... while it was easy to pull over the sand, I could tell it was definitely at the upper limits of how much weight I could add. Kites, board, harness would have collapsed my rig as soon as I hit the sand.

There is some interesting stuff here... I have not tried any of it but would love to have some feed back from those who have...

Interesting LM cuz the spot I was talking about down east from where I am all the locals had modified golf carts. I would estimate that my golf bag with clubs weighs 20 lbs. You must have had too much ..... juice......

It's 2010. Google is your friend.
Go to google, type in beach cart, and you will find stuff like this:

You can get a fold up dolly from the hardware store at this link...
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6 ... BTruck.jsp

You could put a lot of stuff on this dolly and it folds up flat. I might get one.

Hey Mobettah

Maybe I did have to much ....juice... :P
I will mention though, that the carts I tested this on... 3 in total were previously used carts I had kicking around from when I used to golf (before I found kiting, who can afford both?). They were the 40 buck cheapies you would find at Canadian Tire etc....
The problem I ran into with all three was the method they used to keep the wheels from spreading apart to far. One had a cable, and when it broke... I had to carry everything, others had 2 parallel tubes riveted to a molded plastic hinge which attached to the the wheel... guess what broke on that one.....
You may have renewed my faith in this quest.... maybe I will spend some money on one that is sturdier, our place is 500m from the entrance to the beach and then there is another 200m to the waters edge over soft deep sand... carrying my gear is a bit of a burden and I do really need a solution!

The weight of gear... k so a board, 15m kite, 12m kite, bar/lines, harness, wetsuit and pump is about 45 ish lbs (dry), I just weighed it before I left for Cuba... I had to put my other bar and smallest kite in another bag to stay under the 50 lb limit. Wet... you can easily add 10 lbs if not more, so what ever cart you get or build, it needs to function well with 60lbs on it unless you only bring one kite down with you which seems to back fire on me every time!

Sincerely going to get some more ...juice....

Pete

Hey Frank

That one would work great on hard packed surfaces or gravel but I bet it would be a challenge to pull through soft sand... wheels are just to skinny.

Be a good workout :) At least the load would on your legs and not your back LOL...
I'd modify it for larger wheels. If you had an old mountain bike I think you could rig up a simple light cart from the wheels and frame somehow...

Or you could use a kayak/canoe dolly...

A little more pricey though.
