best board for chop

Postby rightguard » Tue May 18, 2010 11:28 pm

I live and kite on Maui for only about a year now. I'd really like to find a board that works well with all the chop that we get. I know a lot of boards are designed for pop, freestyle, racing... stuff like that.

What is the best board for all around cruising threw big chop?

I like the look of the jimmy lewis boards, but what do you think?

you need medium - soft flex boards. There are a lot at market. The best thing you should do is go to dealers and ask for a ride to test em. I recon at maui you will have many options to choose from. Else go to a custom made . I can suggest you one dealer but it is on Greece if you intrested and you need to contact him. I am not a dealer nor a friend of him , i just know he makes really good boards concidering your weight , skill level and weather - sea conditions.

narrower for stability and a bit of length for stability also 132/136 x38?...
greater tip with waist width ratio (ie narrower tips) - so less likely to back into each bit of chop
bit more rocker - not too much mind
medium to soft flex and or soft/ thick rounded rails - but they kind of don't work together really as if a board has thick soft rails it will be stiff normally..

If you can demo a bro-kite board you will see that it is a great board in chop. Check out their website! PM me with any specific questions, best board I have ever ridden :thumb: :bye:

I kite in Maui.. The best board for the conditions by far is the nobile 555 (T5). You gotta try that board you will not be sorry.

I think you need to call all the shops and demo.

I personally don't consider Maui choppy - more nicely formed big rollers - so if you just go on line looking for a board for chop you might get something targeted more for poorly formed and tightly spaced inland or bay voodoo chop.

For your question - brands have different shapes and usually have something specialized for chop & more turny for swell slashing vs. flat water. For example, in the slingshot line, the SX series would be the shape best suited to your request.

Another reason to demo is size - getting it just right needs a demo. I've tried boards that I thought were awful and then went down a size (only a few centimeters) and suddenly it came to life.

Thanks for the ideas...

I found a couple places today to rent boards, I think that's a great idea.

yup, pop by the different stores and demo demo...on that demo list include the naish sol..rounded tips, and a nice flex...the new footstraps also makes it much softer ride...
