Viana do Castelo wind and wave in August

Postby poldo » Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:55 pm

We're planning a 10-days trip somewhere not too far from Italy at the beginning of August. Looking for wind (more than 15 knots) and waves (1,5 - 2,5m). what more? :)

W're interested in North of portugal, like Viana do castelo and other spots around there. What's the % of windy days there NOW? The average wind strength? Could we take 3-4 days of no-wind?

I've seen some videos about Viana and a lot of them shows flat or almost no wave. Are there always waves there only need to go more far from the harbour barrel? do you suggest other wave spot (no too rocky) around there?

Alternatively we're thinking to other more common kitetrip spot as Fuerte or Lanzarote, but I like soo much Portugal not only for wind and sea but for the people and landscapes... 8)

thanks to all contributing here... :bye:

Guincho if you want wind and waves. the North can be epic but not so consistent as Guincho due to my experience. if you want 10 days of riding, go to guincho and remember your smallest kite!

It as been windy almost every day and down the end of the viana bay there are good waves.

Wind in viana is very constant. check windguru and add 10knots of thermal effect everytime the wind is from N or NW

Check out this vid.

thanks all for the replies!

@Leepasty: I've been to Guincho 2 years ago, I kitesurfed here but is a very strong spot with strong gusty wind and some rocks and I'd like a bit less advanced spot. Perhaps we could be there 1-2 day coming back to Lisbon.

@taabsr: thanks for the info, I'll compare next days the windguru forecast with the effective wind there. Spots seems very nice with flat water and also smooth waves, but for sure going around there there are a lot of great waves spot

we were luckky about wind, 6 kites days on 8day holiday

we stay in Viana 2 Days, nice flat spot with strong thermal wind (1 day 11m, other 7m well powered),very cold water (4/3 wetsuit needed) but absolutely flat. Good for freestyle. There could be waves only with VERY big swells (not so often in summer). In Moledo no wind (we knew wind there no thermal)

After this we went to Figuera da Foz, where stay a friend of us. Here blows a good thermal wind (15-20 kts) form N, less than in Viana, but waves are ok. In the beaches south of the city there is a lot of space, some kiter (very friendly!). We had good 1,5m waves (but look the tide beacause with high tide waves only shorebreak, good waves with low tide). There is a bit less cold but a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended.

we didn't go to guincho beacuse told that was too crowded (15 August!)

as ever a very nice stay in Portugal, see you next time! :bye:
