Airush Smart Bar 2010 Jammed

Postby davesails7 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 2:13 pm

I sent an email to Airush, but I didn't get a response. I have the Airush Smart Bar 2010 that allosw you to ride it as a 45 cm bar or a 55 cm bar. We had light wind all summer, so I was using it as a 55cm bar for 4 or 5 months. Now the winds picking up, and I want to use 45 cm, but the bar is stuck together.

I was able to free up the pins with wd40 and working them for awhile, but I still can't pull the bar apart even with the pins pushed in. Salt must've gotten in there even though I fresh water rinsed it every time. Warning to people who have this bar, make sure you take it apart and wash it thoroughly every few sessions.

So what do I do now? Any ideas? I'm thinking of soaking it in fresh water for a day or two, so hopefully it disolves the salt stuck in the bar?

They used that system 20 years ago on windsurf booms. No-one uses it now in windsurfing because of the corrosion causing jamming.

You can try white (clear) vinegar. Try to get it to soak in between the tubes, which can help dissolve the corrosion.

Tip: if you want this bar (or an old windsurf boom, beach umbrella, etc.) to keep working, take it completely apart to rinse it. Ideally, it will need to be stored disassembled also, especially if left to sit a while.
Unfortunately this is not at all convenient for kiting, because of the lines....
When I look at stuff like this and the unneccessarily tight tolerances, use of materials that wear out in one season, etc, in many brands, I wonder just how bad some companies' product development or "engineering" departments are.

Anybody out there need a tester or consultant on practical kite gear design?
I'm cheap.and have 25 years experience abusing windsports equipment!

the single fact that you spend a load of money on kit from a kite company and they cant seem to take time to respond is bullshit

Contact the Airush or your local distributor, it's their problem, not yours.

I have the same bar but haven't this issue with it. Maybe cause I change it length from time to time or we have less salted water :?: But thanks for the warning, the summer gets its end and it's the time to preserve the bar.
PS: Don't sure but later in the season in addition to bar they give a small package of silicone wax, I get mine without it last winter.

I did receive a response from airush. The response was delayed because of the new models coming out and people going to shows. They're getting me a replacement bar for a very reduced price.

It seems like the new bars do come with wax that will stop this from happening. Mine didn't come with the wax because I had one of the first ones.

The bar looks similar to windsurfing boom. The booms have to be checked after every session otherwise they become one sail only. It is just a fact of life. I don't know about the wax.

Wax or some Vaseline would work.

Keep clean and check function of all gear regularly.
