Iceland in july - what winds to expect?

Postby kiter4fun123 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 11:22 am

Hi!

Going to Iceland in july with the family. Will be driving around the southest and northeast coast and thought about some adhoc stop for kiting (on water)

What typical windrange should I cover to maximize my chances :D

I'm not from Iceland and never been there, but live in Sweden. You can expect frontal winds brought by low pressures. So 12-35 knots.

We were on family vacation in Iceland in July 2015. Drove all the way around the island in two weeks, and saw much of the coast. Great vacation in a beautiful place with super nice people! I did not bring kitegear, and did not really regret it. Wind varied considerably from day to day and spot to spot. Anything from 5 to 45 knots and locals told us that the weather is very unpredictable. When the wind was on it was cold! Did not see a single kiter, and most beaches we saw were completely deserted. So know what you are doing or try to hook up with some of the locals. (kiteboarding.is)

Thanks for input!
I'll only kitesurf if the conditions are good, have a split board so easy to pack the gear with me.
(just for info: kiteboarding.is seams to be down)

No such thing as kiteboarding.is (I would know). We hang out in a closed facebook group called: 'Kite Grúbban' (hehe original). Yes, frontals but nowhere near 35 knots during the summertime, winter yes. 5-25 would be closer. June-July is often pretty calm. I would suggest something big for that time of year, 10m - 12m - low wind kite (foil 18/19m)

You have the beaches all to your self over there, we hang out around Reykjavík area (unless you are lucky to meet some of us on a vacation) and count as much as 5 persons at a time on the water! The whole kitesurfing crowd is maybe 10-15 people.

Sounds great Geir,
I'll take my lw foil and a small kite if the wind kicks in.
I've a split board so It'll be quite easy taking the kites with me even if chances of riding will be small.

Are the beaches usually easily accessible with a 4wd?

(we'll take the coastal roads all the way down to Skògar for some hiking. Seams to be a really good spot close to Porlákshöfn with possibility to kite in all wind directions as the road is borded on each side by beaches.

After that we will drive to Snaefellsjökull National park and from what I can see on googlemaps both Dritvik and Djúpalónssandur seams to be nice spots in SO - to - NW winds.)
