Traveling with lufthansa?

I am going on a kiting trip to kenya this january, I had a few questions regarding baggage rules. I called them and they said I was allowed 2 bags up to 50lbs each. their length limit is 140cm and my bag is 158cm... Also there is extra charge for sports equipment. If it were charged as a golf bag it would cost $100.00 and the oversize charge would be $70.00. That is $170.00 each way. Just curious if anybody knows if you are allowed free sports equipment bag as a substitute for one of your checked bags? She also said that there would be a 33lb weight limit on the sports bag. That does not make sense. So they charge me $170.00 more but I get 17lbs less.
